My dog Cookie brought a small grey bundle to me as I sat outside reading last Friday. I was surprised to see that it was a young bird that wasn't quite ready to fly but must have fallen out of its nest and also surprised that she didn't eat it. I brought him (?) inside as it was nearly dark and kept him in a box until the morning when I looked up care for wild baby birds.
I found that you should put the baby in a tree or bush where the mother can feed it because it would call for the mother. I put the box in the tree and over the next few days I could hear cheeping and such in that direction. Every time I looked into the box (the top was open) the baby looked fine. I had to bring him in a couple of nights because of rain.
This morning I looked in the box and it was empty. Yesterday the baby was flapping its wings and moving around quite a bit so apparently he was ready to fly away. I thought he needed long tail feathers to fly but I guess not.
So the baby bird is gone, having been well fed and cared for with minimal interference from me. If you find a baby bird you should leave it if it is safe or do as I did if you have animals that may get to it and harm it. I'm very pleased that I managed to save the poor thing, it's just an extra bit of song I'll have this year and he'll probably be eating from my feeder this winter!

You did well to rescue the bird, I'm surprised that it survived, the shock of being caught by Cookie could have killed it. You did the right thing to look up how to care for it, well meaning people kill birds out of ignorance. So that little bird was plucky and lucky and it had a mother who did not give up and a carer who took care.

It certainly did my heart and spirit good. This is the first one I've ever managed to save.
I had a dog once, Bleu, a stray that was a very good dog. She brought me baby bunny, carrying it so gently in her mouth. Then another, and another! She'd found an unattended nest (this was the desert) and so we put them back and the mother came back soon to care for them. Bleu never bothered them again. It's funny how animals try to take care of each other. We could all learn a lesson from them.

What a lovely dog Bleu must have been. I agree that animals have a lot to teach us and we have still a lot to learn. I don't understand why scientists want us to explore space when there are so many unexplored possibilities here on planet earth.

You are very kind to birds and let the baby bird go back to nature.I think you have done your bit for the ecological balance.I find out not a few mylotters are bird lover. What impressed me most is one of my mylot friends said in a discussion that he /she spends a lot of money on feeding wild birds every year.

I spend a lot to feed the birds in the winter, too. This past winter the seed they needed for best nutrition went from $12 a bag to $29!!!! But I love to watch them and can't stand the think of them scrounging and barely surviving the winter snows so I spend the money.
One less bird to sing to me would create a silence I could not tolerate.

It strikes me that you are the very person who spent a lot on feeding the wild birds I have mentioned in my comment above.I don't know if you still remember I have proposed that you might as well buy the perillaseed .I am glad to have such a friend as you.

That's a nice experience for you, and obviously very beneficial to the bird. it's good that you took the time to research and find out what the right thing to do is.

I learned a lot about birds, too. Most of all, I was shocked that Cookie did not eat it!

Yay! That is so very, very cool. A beautiful little black bird flew into my window and was knocked on conscience. Long story short I picked it up and put it in a box on our patio table. I could tell its little heart was still beating. It took a half a day or so before it could fly away. All I did was make sure it had water and kept the coyotes and cats at bay. I really should put something on our windows to show birdies it's a window. Anyhow, well done Dragon...

Maybe I should stop cleaning my windows then. Maybe not.
It is a good feeling to help a little creature. And by the way, apparently there are special dcals for us to buy. Who knew?

Birds often fly into windows and stun themselves although some break their poor little necks and die. I usually put decals on my windows or hang stained glass ornaments if there is no screen behind them to let the birds know it is not free air. Of course, my windows are rarely clean enough to be perceived as invisible!
It's a good feeling, though, when you're able to help a wild creature.

I think most people would try to rescue the bird. We are shown all of the bad and very little of the good that people do. I cannot resist a child or an animal in trouble.

I remember fondly when I lived in my old place where we had four cats, I was forever rescuing frogs from their clutches, I lost count the amount of times they would bring in frogs, fortunately most of the time I was around to catch them. I bought a couple of tanks to put the frogs in, the last thing I wanted to do was to let them go only for the cats to bring them back in again! When I got a collection of frogs I would carefully put the tank in my car and drive to the nearest lake and let them free. It's a wonderful feeling when you save an animal, no matter how small.

While it's natural for cats to do that, it's heartbreaking. I like frogs! Have you thought what would happen if cats killed all the frogs? Bugs, bugs, bugs!!
I'm glad you have a such a tender heart.

While I haven't rescued a baby bird, I did rescue a baby squirrel when I was in junior high school. When I was visiting one of my great aunts' house a baby squirrel had been pecked on the back of the neck and had a large infected bump there when we found it on the ground. It was obvious that just leaving it alone would not work for it to survive. So I took it home and with help from my mother, we lanced the infected bump and nursed the squirrel back to health. It was too small to be returned to the wild immediately, so it became a sort of pet for some time while it was growing up. We were able to even handle it and treat it like some other house pet. But as it got closer to being grown it became obvious this would not be good in the long term. I eventually had to start keeping it in the garage in a cage. After awhile of that, I started leaving the cage door open. Eventually it would start venturing out into the yard for short times and returning to the cage. This went on for several months with the time it spent away from the cage getting longer until it was out most of the day but was returning to the cage at night. Then it starting staying out at night and soon quit returning to the cage. There were several squirrels that we would see around our yard but there was one that was much less afraid of me and I knew it was the one that I had helped.

What a beautiful experience that must have been! I love squirrels and they are so personable. Around here they have learned that they can drive Cookie nuts if they come in the tree than jump to the garage and back. They sit there and flick their tails at her and can keep her busy for hours. Their favorite thing to do is to come up close to the fence but stay in the alley and run back and forth so she follows them.
I'm glad your baby squirrel survived. Every one of God's creatures is precious.

Dragons are everything the movies portray and more. We just have a very soft spot in our hearts for anything not human!

It was just a sparrow and my neighbor said we have too many and I should let it die. No! I'm so glad he survived and is gone. I've found baby birds before and thought I should take them in and try to feed them, believing the old myth of if you touch a bird the mother will abandon them. So I feel very good about this one. I hate seeing one of God's creatures die. This is a good day for me!

Mostly I just let nature take its course and protected the little bird. I hope you'll read the reply above yours about saving a baby squirrel, it's very inspiring.

I can't ignore an animal in distress. I consider saving animals as thanking God for all He has given us. They are His children the same as we are.
