Are you in favor of paper bags instead of plastic bags?

People here in our metro is protesting about the usage of paper bags. Can you believe it? they would rather prefer to use plastic bags than paper bags. That's because plastic bags are durable than paper bags and it will take lots of trees to cut down for producing bags. But how about the waste disposal of our country? Well, you might say one of the reasons our country gets flooded because of plastic bags everywhere. Waste disposal is not being practice religiously as our country seems to be religious in more things than these. That's one great debate right now. Are you paper bag user or a plastic bag user? How would you defend your answer to this? Let me know your feedback. Happy mylotting!

I am in favor of using paper bags instead of plastic bags because we can recycle the paper. I don't think it means more trees are going to be cut. And if carrying groceries with paper is a trouble, why don't we just bring our own grocery bag or "bayong" like they use to in the old times :) -Save Earth-

I totally agree with you. However, I noticed something in this generation of Filipinos, we are very dependent on others to fix our own issues from the smallest bits to blaming others for the consequences of our own actions. This issue with plastic bags and paper bags is just so small that if one actually think things through, it's an easy issue to fix. Why go through the trouble of protesting or debating about this issue? Next time we know, we'll see our government spending billions again just to discuss and debate this paper bag vs plastic bag issue.

We're sharing our thoughts but as we speak, it is now a major debate in the government's field. LOL. And those teams who are trying to haggle are the merchants and the consumers against MMDA and other environmentally-thingy teams. If we raised this matter in public, one group might get offended or another. The reason I opened this topic is for me to weight options and what's the best practices that we can do about it so far. Who knows, small step creates a huge change :D

People should give this change some time. A month or two in the change is not enough. They should give it 6 months and more to see the benefits of this change and compare if it's for the betterment of the society or not. And instead of just focusing on their own views, they should think for the good of the many. And instead of thinking on short terms, they should focus on the benefits in the long term. Would you like to be comfortable for only a moment and suffer the consequences later? Or would you like to suffer now, develop and be able to live comfortably in the future? In my case, I'll be taking the latter. "You give the future enough to do something but not enough to do nothing."(The Descendants)

I do understand the advantages and disadvantages of each side. If you wish for durability, a good quality plastic bag it would be. Plastic bags are not use if they easily break too. Now think of it this way, in our country, in order to produce more bags at the same time maintain the price, managers have to lower the quality of the material. Almost all businesses do this. But if one wants to help nature "in a way", it would be best to use the most natural. Though one needs to cut down trees (we know in order to prevent flood, Metro Manila needs a forest not just a bunch of trees) in order to do this--but one can take out that problem by planting more trees. This method is a kind of investment that if it works, it'll make things better--and not worse compared to the latter. Because if we continue to go down this path that we are used to taking, it would no longer surprise me if Philippines will go down the drain soon. Though my own suggestion, instead of using either of the two, in terms of buying dry goods, why not use those eco-bags? And use only th bio-bags (plastic) for goods carrying a wet good wrapped in a real plastic container. Instead of protesting or debating about it, why can't they think of things to fix that issue instead of passing it to those already "busy" leaders? Sometimes I think most people living in this country are stupid. Sorry, but that's what's going on in my opinion about my fellow countrymen right now.

Great feedback from you, getting more paper bags or plastic bags either way won't save the environment if there's irresponsible citizens around. LOL. Carrying your own shopping bags will do :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts and happy mylotting :D

I'm currently working and apparently I've just ended my shift just now, thanks to those prolonged chats I'll be able to watch Hunter X Hunter on local TV. LOL. So goes with the topic, they're promoting those reusable bags lately; but keep in mind that not all people will carry that kind of bag whenever they shop as they tend to rely on the bags on hand from those shops, maybe shops should imposed a bill to collect a certain fee to use bags to carry purchased goods (hey, even customers are always right, that's why this should be implemented and protected by the law). I carry mine but to be honest, I'm still in adjustment as I also "tend" to forget bringing my bag whenever I shop for groceries. It takes a lot of practice AND REMINDERS FOR THAT, lol. Hope to hear more from you and happy mylotting about it :D

Are you working, Resy? Or is 5 AM really your waking time? Well, back to the issue. I think that each material has its own use. It is best to not depend merely on one but since we already have this opportunity, why not make use of the two materials that would create the best possible results. I mean, like fork and spoon, each different but has the same function. Instead of making a "versus" of the two, something can be made to make it go together. I mean, some people use plastics as a yarn already and calls it plarn. It goes with yarns as well but it's plastic. Most of the time, they are used to keep the material made from that raw material from getting wet, more durable and more handy to use compared to the traditional yarns. I mean, you'll realize when you'll see this: http://www.plasticbagcrafts.com/make-plarn/ (The link above is not a referral link) This is creative, nature friendly (I think) and handy in terms of issues about disposing some plastic materials.

I would much rather use reuseable bags. I always forget them though so never do use them, which is bad on my part. Though I use plstic instead of paper most of the time because I shop at walmart, and they don't have paper. Plastic is cheaper to make, and more durable in certain ways. Paper is durable too though. Either of those though, are bad for the environment. I work at a grocery store where one of my customers asks for paper INSIDE OF plastic, too be durable and keep wet things from leaking through the paper bags.

The problem also with me being a environmental-savior is I tend to look like a rat-pack and everything on my locker tends to get worse. If there are tutorials online to reuse them (and should be implemented by our country's concerned groups) that's better. That's going to be very beneficial and encourage more artist to work on recycled materials.

I forget to bring my reusable bags too until I started leaving them in my car lol! I find myself going to the store without even thinking and before I know it I'm at the store. Then I ask myself what do I need here so I'd go inside and browse and before I know it I have stuff in my cart that I wanted! Like dr pepper fruits and veggies cute little earrings for my girls and junk food! Stuff like that and then I would go to the check out lane and I would tell the cashier person that this time I have my own bags; save a couple of trees!

For me it is a problem too. I myself or we at the house does not just throw our plastic bags away. We collect them and use them as waste bags for trash inside the house. They are better than paper bags really because they are durable. Paper bags are not good too since they are not durable to use but very easy to dispose and burn. If you use washable cloth bags, I think it can be a lot better. I am not really sure maybe we should just be wise in using them and learn to recycle as much as possible.

That's really good to hear :D The thing here in our country is we don't have that proper waste disposal. We uses plastic bags here to disposes our garbage in a durable way, thing is we don't know where it goes after we dispose it. The next thing is they clog our drainage big time and there goes flash floods in the middle of a drizzling night. It is really nice that we're reusing plastic bags, but for us here; while our government is still working on a better way for garbage disposal, we have to work in an alternative way to minimize plastic usage. (since we haven't; again, don't know where does our trashes go) Good to hear a feedback about this from you, Averygirl. Happy mylotting :D

I'm in favour of paper bags of course. If supermarkets use them because they are durable that is the very reason why they should not. They take years, maybe decades to break down and they are totally alien to nature. A Lotter from Malaysia wrote about a plastic bag free day being announced by the supermarkets and as a result people tended to stay away rather than bring their own shopping bags or accept paper ones. It may come as a surprise to young shoppers these days, but women used always to go shopping with their own shopping bags, and that is within living memory. In those days it was a case of buying less more often as supermarkets were still a novelty. After shopping bags we used large shopping bags on wheels so that we could shop once a week at the supermarkets. Then we started driving to the supermarkets and couldn't fit the 'shopping trolleys' into the boot -then the plastic bags arrived. I blame the supermarkets for encouraging the trade. In Greece plastic bags are everywhere, in the kitchen for disposal purposes, in the dumpers collecting household waste, in the streets and hanging from the trees even in the beaches after people have picniced and just left things around. I think plastic bags are the worst invention of the 20th centure.

I LOL over the "I think plastic bags are the worst invention of the 20th century" quote. That's somewhat I agree. Apparently it should be massively produced and endorse to the public because to be blunt; not all of the consumers recently are responsible. Bringing shopping bags **with those cutesy designs and well, status quotes** is better. Love it :) For that matter, you made me realize in this post that yup, they should end up using plastic bags despite of being durable; it is too durable for our ecosystem to break it down. Thank you so much for sharing your insights about this problem and letting us know what it feels way back then when shopping are more enjoyable by the families (and they should definitely let us use those dainty shopping carts more like it was before) and happy mylotting ^_^-)

I prefer the use of paper bags because it is environment friendly than plastic. The only problem in implementing it is that some business establishments use a very poor quality in producing paper bags, that is why most of the time before we reach our destination our paper bags are torn apart. Discipline is the virtue that everybody must possess in order to have a better environment. Proper waste disposal must be followed. In heavier loads plastic bag is more durable or sturdy. But when we are used of carrying our big bags going to supermarket or malls, I guess that would be better. :)

Exactly. I am in favor of what you're saying :D If there was one durable paper bag that can withstand drizzles (minimal water damage) and heavy packages, that was once made of recycled, unbleached cardboard. Starbucks has been participating in using paper bags from recycled paper and it has been popular in them. For this matter, we might have to tolerate ourselves using paper bags for the time being as we minimize using plastic bags while the government is still working in our garbage disposal processes. If you're upto durability; we should bring cloth bag with us or shopping bags made of cloth or recycled tetra packs will do. I hope to hear more from you about these. Thanks and happy mylotting more about it :D

Although the paper bags seem to be much more environmental than the plastic bags. However, it will use up a lot of trees to make the paper bags. So it is not a very good solution yet. When I go out, I prefer to bring my own cloth bag so that I can do something better for our environment to save some paper or plastic bags. This is already my habit. I love China

Maybe a law should be implemented that everyone should have their own cloth bag or at least 2 reusable plastic bags when they shop. This is also to encourage shops to minimize their plastic and paper bag productions. Paper bags often when not in use, can be put away for other uses like gift wrapping and decorating. It can be sell to junk shops when in bulk and also kept as a rag tissue in cases. This is BETTER to use for garbage disposal. Plastic bags can be used for keeping wet goods in cases. plastic bags can be woven to use as bags like "bayong" (knitted Filipino bags) and can be used as another alternative for shopping bags. I've seen those shiny shopping bags made from tetra pack juices and also cute during summer. Should also be promoted massively to the public since this is durable ^_^-)

I am not in favor of both plastic bags and paper bags. In Muntinlupa, where we usually grocery shop, we just have to bring our own eco bags. These bags can just be folded and can fit right into our pockets so whenever we go grocery shopping, no plastic or paper bag is wasted, eco bags can be used no matter how many times we want. So if I were to be asked, I don't want to use both. I prefer the eco bags. The big green bag.

I think it doesn't break easily. We have the same eco bags for over a year now. I think they're very durable.

I kinda agree with you. Right now some of the malls also are promoting shopping bags to the public to save them for producing more package bags, plastic and paper bags alike. Great job that you have your own shopping bag. Great way of saving the environment. I'm also encouraging myself (yes, myself since I am also one of those forgetful types) to bring a shopping bag with me, too. In that way, I can also save the environment. For now, we will deal with I think; paper bags since the plastic bag disposal issue in our country hasn't been resolve yet. LOL :) Thanks for both of you and happy mylotting. I'll be looking forward for more of your feedback.

Yeah, same like you nowadays i tend to like my eco bags as well. We can re-use it many times as we like unless when it started to break then we will need to buy another new one.

There are many places where they only give plastic bags when you buy something in my country. I started to think about it and I remembered how things were done a long time ago. I made (and they were still in my house gathering dust) some canvas bags. You can put rocks inside and they won´t be torn. I washem and take them to the super. I also bought a bigger canvas bag with wheels (as if it was a suitcase) that I use when I go shopping to the nearest super (walking and saving energy) and bring too many things to carry. When I buy my meds, I take a handbag where I can put them with no extra plastics. Happy posting!

Neither. I would much rather everyone use their own re-usable bags because they are much better for the environment. My husband & I have started doing this & we are much better for it. If we were all to do this then the earth itself would be a much better, cleaner place to live.

I think both side has a point. Using a lot of plastic will eventually flood us due to some irresponsible people disposing their waste improperly. On the other hand, it is also true that we will have to cut many trees to produce paper bags. In a way, I'm in favor of using paper bags but maybe we should first rebuild our nature/forest. Let's start by planting and growing trees first, then maybe we'll be confident of producing papers cause we'll be having a replacement in time. In the case of plastic versus paper, some sort of a work around should be thought of. I suggest that for the mean time, a schedule for the week should be made on when to use plastic and paper. Let's say Monday to Friday for plastic while Saturday and Sunday will be for paperbags then we'll see if there'll be some improvement. We don't have a choice, something needs to be done for our environments sake. Everyone has to contribute, we're a team.

In certain cities here in our country they forbid to use straws on Fridays (Pasig City) and it works well. Eventually they've changed it to non-plastic usage in all items being purchased. (wow, how about plastic wares to be bought from hardware, are they forbidden? LOL) and some had been opposing it because no matter how "biodegradable items are, it gets flooded still in Pasig. LOL. You've got a point back there. We may have a choice but not either the two of these. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and happy mylotting about it more here in this site. Looking forward for more of your thoughts :)

i use paper bags, because plastic bags can't be recycled when they are burned they produce many harmful substances that is spreading air pollution. Though paper is made from trees but those can be recycle again and agin there by we can protect our atmosphere too. People should think for the world as well rather than being selfish.

I'm on both sides of using plastic bags and paper bags. I refer to use plastic bag due to its durability, the thing is the proper disposal. I also refer paper bags but what will happen to our forest and mountains after years of using paper bags. It's still us who will suffer in the end. May I suggest to use a large bag made of buri palm leaves?

Resy, nowadays people in my country here had get used to accept paper bags. We are being educated as how important to have a cleaner environment. Whenever i go shopping, i always make sure that i bring along my recycle shopping bags. In case, i forgotten to bring along my shopping bags, then i need to pay if i want to use the plastic bags. Nowadays, i always prepared some shopping bags in my car. So, i don't have to carry any plastic bags back to my home. I tried to cut-down the plastic bags in my home by re-use them to throw away my unwanted rubbish. I tried my best to re-use and re-cycle almost everything in my home.

They are just looking on solution to problem at hand without analyzing the result and effect later. I think the government should implement a law on this (just as what is being done now in some cities) and impose it strictly and consistently. I would prefer paper over plastic but in cases where use of paper is not plausible then use bags made of cloth or other eco-friendly materials as replacements to plastic. Why? - plastic is one major cause of clogging on waterways as this won't just rot and could last for years.

I really agree on that. I also felt bad about those animals in the sea eating plastics mistakenly and die eventually. While they're still analyzing a better solution to dispose waste properly, paper bags should be implemented. The question is; it's durability. As we live in our busy lives, we tend to depend on those "instant" things around us. And if we tend to forget basic handling and disposing these, it ends up as a unnecessary waste and pollutes the environment. Government should imply these cloth bag usage for shopping and such, for smaller purchase, paper bag is useful and for wet goods; light biodegradable plastics should be allowed only. **ONLY WHEN IT IS A WET GOOD** Thanks and happy mylotting with us :D

I don't know either. LOL. That's why I am starting a discussion like this. More often than not, it's not everyone who bring their cloth bags when they go out and shop. They still rely on the shops plastic or paper bags provided by the shops when they buy something. Right now in our country it is debated which kind of bags should they use when a customer purchase an item. As of this point I want to know other's thoughts what kind of bags would you prefer to use when you're buying goods or shopping out. Thanks for clarifying it with me and hope to hear more from you in this discussion, you have a good point so far in bringing shopping bag on your own when going out to the market. Hope it will also inspire most of our mylotters to do the same as you share your thoughts here about this. happy mylotting :D

i am highly in favour of paper bags because they are really a solution to pollution.do you know that plastic bags are the most majoursource of plastic pollution and are destroying our environments.on the other hand a paper is a bilogical compound that is envirronment friendly.
