Writing ebooks for kindle

Has anyone ever tried to write an eBook and publish it on Kindle. I have seen quite a few things around the net lately that say it is a good way of generating a nice passive income stream. I was just wondering how difficult it is, since I am a reasonable writer and have considered writing a book before. Is the process relatively easy and can you actually make reasonable money?
