I have a 10 year old beagle. She's a rescue so I don't know her history, but she's mostly well-behaved. The thing is she doesn't seem to have much obedience training. Do you think it's important for her to learn to do things like heel, stay, and maybe a trick or two? She seems to be happy, but all she does is sleep all day. I want her to have a good life. Would obedience training help her have that?

You have to take her out for walk, I think. May be she need more to go out and meet other dogs.

People in my area are a little bit anti-social. As far as I know there are no dog parks or classes to let dogs hang out with each other. When they do walk their dogs they rarely want to let their dog say hi to mine. Most of the time the only contact my dog gets with other dogs is barking from inside houses as we pass by. It's a shame, but that's just how it is around here.

In my opinion,i don't think it would be helpful to have obedience training for the dog to have a good life.I think it would be better to let the dog be natural and do what it want to do.Yes,just let it enjoys its daily life.Because if you force it to do want it don't want to do,such as obedience training, then it would feel unwilling to do it.And finally it would feel that life is unhappy. So,if you want to let your dog to have a good life, then you just let your dog enjoy its daily life.

One thing I'm worried about is her getting out of the backyard and not coming when she's called. She could get hit by a car. As long as I keep her in the house she's fine.

I guess try and see if you can teach an older dog new tricks. It may not be too important for the beagle, seems like the dog will be happy either way.
