Critters That Gnaw Wood

Today my dad went out to the garage and saw in front of the door, where they put the one biggest trash can with the wooden bendable top/lid on, that it was gnawed through with a small orange sized kind of hole in it to get to the garbage underneath. He had to go to Home Depot to get some wood to fix it and he did. I guess these critters could smell something in the garbage and really wanted to get at it. My question is what kind of animal would do this? We have skunks, raccoons, possums,a few smaller snakes, and perhaps an odd bigger bird like a hawk or so. But I'm not sure which ones can get through wood this way! The wood was like an inch thick I think if I remember right.

I would dare say it was a toss between the rats, raccoons or possums. To even narrow it down further I would probably not include the raccoons in on this caper. Raccoons are very smart and it is possible that they would have figured out how to take the lid off without creating the hole in it. I hope it does not happen again.
