Shorter Battery Life

I bought my laptop/netbook less than two years ago (1 year and 7 months). I noticed that when I use it using the battery as the main source of power, it would not anymore reach an hour and it would automatically shut down unlike during the previous months when it could reach for three hours or more. Is this really like this, after a year, the life span of the battery would normally went down or I have done something wrong? As of now I am planning to buy a new battery pack so that I could use during emergencies, say there is a longer power failure or I need to go somewhere, just for a reserve. I would like to solicit some advice from you my dear fellow myLotters regarding this matter. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

yes, some laptop manufacturer set a expiration date on the battery for almost 6 months, 1 year and if your lucky they would last for 2 years. i been using four types of laptops, namely one fujitsu netbook, two acer, and a dell. so far the acer last more four year up to the present. when i use the battery it reach life of at least an hour. while a brand new acer could takes up to two hours. when i am not using the battery. i just move it out and plug my laptop to an adapter. in this way i could conserve the battery to last longer. while, in a dell laptop, they have always a problem when t comes to battery life as they tend to get worn out in a matter of months and you need to replace them. also, i observe that a laptop suddenly turn black even f it is plugged and have battery as t indicate the battery is not working, so i need to unplug it again, to see if the battery s working again. that s detach the plug, remove the battery get t back for at least 10 seconds, afterwards get the battery back to its compartment and plug the connectors and adapters to the electric socket. and voila !your battery is running again, just keep t even it is plugged directly to the electrical outlet. in this way you could observe the performance of the battery.

You're a rich babe! That's what I call my friends who have three or more cellphones. Now since you have four laptops, you are richer. he he. Well, thank you for the comprehensive discussion. I really learned a lot from you.

Hello aries. Batteries come in different forms, shapes, brands and most of all prices. I think, if you want your laptop battery to last longer you should consider the price. This is the most logical reason after all, isn't it?

It's not actually the price. You see laptop has their own battery brand. You should only buy what's compatible with your laptop regardless of the price It's how you calibrate your battery. And battery has a lifespan. It won't last forever. It's normal life span is only one year for laptops. For apple MacBooks it's 1000 charge cycle which means they last longer and their battery usage is upto 8 hours instead of just 4 hours for ordinary laptops. Though some laptops nowadays have competed with apple and they do have the same amount of usage for battery but the life span is still one year.

Hi mangtony! I don't think I could choose because there is only one form of battery that would fit my laptop and that is the one intended for it and most likely it is of the same brand. Thank you for sharing. Toni is right. Have a nice day to both of you!

You are already very lucky. Do you know that my laptop battery can't last for 15 minutes? I think that's because I always charged it when I used it. So it is harmful for the battery. So I suggest you not to plug your laptop when you use it. Just charge it when the power is low. This is my lesson. I love China

The life of my laptop's battery is more shorter than your,i have used it four years. And it always didn't work ,but i don't know what's wrong with it,then i looked for a computer experts to fix it,however it's still sick as a patient. It's said that when you use your laptop without power source, just use the battery can make it works more long.Unfortunately,it's only useful when we bought it at the earlier time. So maybe you can do it when you buy a new battery. Good luck to you.

Hi xiaopinggai! As what out other friends here say a year and a half is already a good life for a battery. Well, anyway I can still use my laptop by just plugging it directly. That's what is more important for now.

Using your battery as supply in your laptop daily would probably reach 2-3 years. In fact, there are certain techniques to extend the battery life span. Maybe you use your battery while charging which is not applicable. For some instances, it will cause collapse or it triggered that battery to explode. Maybe you should buy a new one. A new laptop battery must be conditioned to operate at its full capacity. You also need to apply the proper procedure in handling battery. Discharging and recharging process of the battery will do. Just take care of it next time...Happy myLotting!

Securing an extra battery as emergency backup is an excellent idea. Laptop battery performance declines with age requiring more reliance on a cord; having a backup battery is just smart.

The life of a laptop battery isn't so much a matter of time as it is usage. A battery only has so many cycles in it, so if you use it a lot and constantly discharge and charge it, it will wear out faster. Of course it also depends on the battery type and size, but with everyday usage, a lot of Windows computer's batteries will only last about a year or so. There are a couple of things you can do to extend the life of your battery though. Once you get a replacement battery for the one you have, save the old one. If you want to use your computer away from the charger, use the new battery. If you are going to be using your laptop at home and can have it plugged in, use the old battery. It will act as standby power in case your electricity goes out, but you won't be using up the new battery. It's not always a good idea to use your laptop with the charger plugged in all the time. Some chargers don't shut off and will keep charging the battery even though it's fully charged. This can shorten the battery's life. By using the old battery with the charger, you don't overcharge the new one and you also don't cycle it all the time. By using this method, your computer will probably wear out before your new battery does.

How often di you use your laptop? And do you use your laptop with the batteries on while it is plugged to a socket? I think it is the most common problems enciunteted in usinv a lsptop. If you are just using your lsptop at home, you should tske off the batter and use direct current through your laptop to save the battery life.

The battery life span usually lasts only a year for laptops. Macbook by Apple on the other hand lasts a little longer. Considering the costs of their notebooks it's only reasonable that their batteries should last longer. After a year, the battery life of your laptop deteriorates. Since you are buying a new one, I suggest you should calibrate your battery. What does calibrating means? It means you have to do the full charge-discharge cycle to reach the potential of your battery use. You have to do that once a month. The best thing to do with your laptop batteries so they would last longer is this: when you are just at home and not somewhere else, remove the battery from your laptop and just use the ac cord or adapter or charger instead. That way you won't be using up your battery life and you will be able to conserve it. The downside of this, is when there's a blackout and you are working on some documents and failed to save them. But anyway, that's the best thing to do and just build the habit of saving your files every 30 minutes. Too bad my macbook pro's battery couldn't be removed. I would be doing the same thing if it were only possible.

Hi toni! I never thought of that before. I just plug my laptop with the battery on it. Well, anyway it's good to know that the life of my battery reach it's lifespan. If I have enough fund I'll consider buying a new laptop and just leave the one I am using right now at home for my children to use. Thank you for this very useful information.

Hi Friend, normally the laptop battery life is one or one and half year only if you use that normally but if you follow the steps necessary steps then your battery life will be more than that for example you should completely discharge your battery between certain days I am not sure about these you better know these steps from the retail shop where you are buying battery, actually I bought hp laptop 4 and half years ago and my battery life was gone in lessthan one year so I went to replace my battery under warrenty then HP people tested my battery by running one software and they told me that you didn't follow certain steps so your battery life gone early. Hope you will follow those steps, actually I forgot those and I am not following now.

Good to know that vijayroy. At least, what is happening on my battery is just a normal thing. Well, anyway the laptop itself is still in good condition. It is just I cannot use it for a longer time using the battery. Thank you sharing this information.

1 year and 7 months is quite short for a new battery,my lapton has been used for over 3 years, but the battery run for three hours everytime,so i think there are some wrong with your using laptop.how often do you use your laptop?for some laptop, continued charging is bad to battery, when battery is full, you should unplug the power, and if you are at home or office or somewhere that have power supply, you should remove battery and use power supply directly, this is benefit for your laptop battery.
