Personally is this not something that continues to frustrate everyone? People who have been brought up as Welfare children who learn get? pregnant and everyone will help you. Even many times when they get married they are too lazy to work or ,never tell the truth to where they get help just because they are too lazy to work. I am getting sick of how many I see like this all. The time, and wish the cycle would stop. There is a time and place for assistance but when people with real medical problems are continuing to be denied and killing themselves or filing medical bankruptcy it makes you winder.
Thank god for personal examples or Tyler Perry and OpraH Winfrey among others who came from poor Welfare families and did not want to settle for second best and made a great life for themselves and even been known to help others less fortunate out. When even the retired on Medicare keep on loosing everything they worked for something has got to stop. Personally I am disappointed in where everything is heading and know only prayers can wake up and change a lot of these peoples hearts.

To this post, I would just like to share this quote:
"Give a man a fish and he will feed for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."
Nice, right?

Well, that is definately something that can relate to this one. Sometimes I think people need to be guided how it is important to be Self sufficiant on their own or be turned away when needing help unless they can prove they are trying.

think it will run continuously if allowed to remain like this. Indeed, if it is seen and felt this would be very annoying.

Yes, and personally I think especially those of us living here in the US will see the outcome and such after our Election takes place next month come January if there is hope for a change or not. Personally it is time to take back the system a little and make people be more responsible, and help them keep jobs, etc. so that there is more available to those who really need it.

Yes it is a big social problem, no easy answers to fix it either. But a lot of good people come out of the ghetto and make a life for themselves elsewhere. I love it when I see them giving back as well.

Personally this is always a Good thing when you see people who have become adults sharing their stories about poverty, etc. and who have made it Big and then giving back to others, especially those less fortunate. It would be nice if more people would want to be like this more for sure.

Hey-- I feel you, Tina-- our current government not only rewards failure, it also punishes success. Right now, 55% of Americans are receiving some form of government assistance-- and that doesn't include all the illegal aliens receiving assistance as well. And the government actually ran commercials on Spanish TV stations AND IN MEXICO encouraging Hispanics to apply for food stamps. It's disgusting. We pay farmers not to farm, and we pay jobless people extra money for having more children, which is senseless. Less than 30 years ago, only 19% of Americans were receiving some form of assistance, and almost half of those were getting social security or disability/ Medicare-- not welfare or food stamps.
It really makes me angry to be behind someone in the grocery checkout line with a cart full of sodas, expensive steaks, TV dinners, chips, sugary cereals and all kinds of other expensive or unhealthy food-- and watch them pull out a food stamp card. As far as I am concerned, the food stamp program should be limited in that you should only be able to use them for fresh fruits and veggies, fresh meats, dairy and eggs, and raw ingredients like pastas, beans, rice and flour and such-- for cooking from scratch. It must be nice to be able to eat 11.99/lb. filet mignon or Salmon steaks on the government dime-- which my taxes pay for. I haven't been able to afford a decent steak in about 3 years, and the only salmon I get is what I catch during salmon season up here-- and I haven't gotten lucky yet this year.

Well it is so true that they give all the benefits to other people now besides the disabled and the retired. Make them have to proove who they are, etc. but allow anyone who does not want to work to get help. Makes me wonder what else can happen, or not happen here.

i FEEL THE VERY SAME WAY, tINA. i THINK IT'S PRETTY DISGUSTING THAT THE GOVERMENT LETS THEM GET BY W/DOING THIS & IT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS & YEARS. Thirty years ago i worked in a convenience & saw it all the time.

You would think people would want to be more self sufficient and eventually want a Good job, and to own a home, etc. but most of the time they feel since we are living in such a depressed economy right now they are better off living off the system, never stopping to think about those who might really need it worse. If these people would be made to be more accountable, then maybe in time we would see more success from these types of people as well.

There are so many people that don't really need help, but work the system so they can get it, they are hurting those of us that need help. It is getting harder and harder for honest people to receive the help they need because everyone is afraid of a scam. I do think it is in the way you are raised, and some people that need and deserve help are too proud to ask for it.

Well, when it becomes an issue like it has become, that those who really need Financial, Medical and Food Stamps have to almost pull teeth to get anything versus those just too lazy to work, or continuing to have kids so they can get Food Stamps, etc. it is crazy. Personally there needs to be a better way, especially for those who might have worked for it.

The idea of welfare was to merely assist people during a difficult time, not to live off of it. Sadly, all that's happening (well, mostly) is that we are perpetuating the cycle. There was supposed to have been some sort of welfare reform (welfare-to-work was a program), and I have seen at least one person succeed. She was a single mother of four young children with no education beyond high school to support them (her husband walked out and refused to pay her a dime!). She went on welfare, but took advantage of the educational programs so that she could support her children. Now her oldest went into the Marines last year, she has a wonderful job and met a really great guy. I know she's the exception, but really, we need to push welfare recipients to take what they need to be self-supporting, instead of becoming a burden. Perhaps by putting a limit on benefits received until they show initiative to get off welfare and become self-supporting members of society.

Yes it would be nice if people on welfare had to be more accountable for themselves like people who are on unemployment have to do so then they would have to be actually trying to better themselves. Quit penalizing people when they try and go back to work and encourage it more-

Yes, that is for sure. The problem becomes when they only continue to encourage everyone to be Lazy instead of trying to help out the ones who are trying to continue to work and try to get ahead. Because personally it is those of us who are working who are paying the Tax dollars that help them.

My mom use to tell me to work smart and not hard; the type people you are describing are taking that idea to a whole new level. They are just not working at all...at least at a regular job. They work hard at working the system; the ones who work will work under the table or choose to be under-employeed so as not to lose their benefits.
It is frustrating to see them work the system and never get caught. It doesn't do much good to turn them in, nothing seems to get done about it. I is even more frustrating to see those who really need the help be denied over and over again. Sometimes I wonder if the multi-generational professionals use up too much of the available funds so that there is not enough to provide for those who are in dire need. Whatever, the whole thing is disappointing and just plain sad.

Personally I think the way they look at things is all wrong. Because even after a person has a huge Medical emergency and need they go by income, even if the person is unable to ever work again, and tell them to come back in like 3 months when they have no income to show. It does make you wonder, and why do they continue to punish the people who deserve the help and give out to those who usually don't? Something has got to change, and I wish we could see something soon.

It used to be an emergency safety net, way back when I was a child. It was considered shameful to be on welfare, yet now it is a cause for pride.
I don't understand why, if a woman is on welfare, we can't give her Norplant or a similar birth control device. That would save us so much money! And crime, too, there would be so few children with no father figure that in 20 years our prisons would be roomy instead of crowded.
That's just one common sense idea but there are many other ways to manage our welfare system. We voters just refuse to demand change.

These would be some ideal options, and ones that would save us as Taxpayers a lot of money for sure. If they made each state be more accountable instead of an offering from everywhere most people would have to prove they needed it instead. They are making it too easy to not work instead of insisting you get help only if it is an Emergency or you're disabled.

I think this kind of system would not stop. But if the government seriously do their job and not for their own good might be possible. The cycle continuous until the end of the world.
It's really annoying they let people continue doing it without the help from the government. Some individuals who have good heart like the persons you mention they are the models. The problem how many individuals will follow them?

That is so True, because in general too many people are always out there with the WOE is ME attitude instead of it is time I go do something about this and change things. Not everyone who comes from a Poor rough life needs it to stay that way, and being abused is your reasons for staying this way, I just wish many more could stand up and say I am better than that, and it is time to move forward.

good thing in our immediate family the trend has stopped. My oldest who was raised on it mostly because of his dads laziness and his dad came from that kind of family has always worked, and has taught the other kids to strive for the same. as a result my kids are the first in the family on his dads side to break that cycle. maybe because he was with my side of the family most of his life, therefore seeing how people should conduct their lives.

Yes there needs to be a lot of changes and cannot see it happening anytime soon, but if they made it stricter and tried helping people more so they would want to get off and stay off that would be a huge plus for sure.

They should make the rules similar to unemployment. Once you sign up you get benefits for 6 months and possibly an extension for an additional 6 months with proof that you looked for jobs. Then it ends! No more freebies! This would get all those people who abuse the system to do something with their lives. People who work and either get laid off or fired only have 6 -12 months to get their life together. Why can't the rest of them. It would be easy if someone would just stop pussyfooting around and took a real stand with a statute that applies nation wide and not by state.

This is interesting, and actually I think something that would actually benefit more people in the long run. I also think they should be more wanting to help with those who are working then those who do not, and they need to keep better Tabs on people as well. What about the ones moving 8 times or more a yr. Unless the person is homeless with a Case Manager, they need to make them prove who they are, and what they are doing with themselves.
