Rice, the staple food for Asian

Asian people eat rice almost everyday, especially if they live in Asia. It is served together with other dishes, usually meat, vegetable and soup. Sometimes, it is even served in the three daily meals i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner. Farmers especially need energy to do their farming. Our body converts carbohydrate to sugar to energy, so rice is a food that becomes a great source of energy for those who toil their bones under the sun for long hours. So even though farmers consume a lot of rice, they still don't become fat. There are many types of rice and each type of rice has its own specialty. For example, the glutinous rice is great for making 'cakes' (Asian cakes), dessert and etc. There's also the purple rice which is grown in the hilly area. It tastes really good too and like the white rice, is also served with other dishes. Here, in my country, I especially like it when it is cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaf is added to make the rice fragrant. Do you like to eat rice? How much rice do you consume?

Well, I am a westerner and I LOVE rice!I eat rice almost everyday. Brown rice. It's called Basmati rice and it's Indian. There are different types of Basmati rice, I don't know them, though. I only buy one kind. But I eat it with stir fry, or vegetables or just plain in a big bowl with butter and salt. It's good if you're on a diet too, because you get energy from it but not fat. If I went to your country I certainly wouldn't starve! When I don't eat rice I eat potatoes. But rice is easier to cook. I like it in soup, too. And it's good with shrimp.

Here in my country, we have the dish called 'nasi briyani'. It is basmati rice cooked with turmeric and some other herbs and usually eaten with chicken curry, fried chicken or mutton curry. But I always like to eat it with some curry and pickles. Hmmm yummy! I find that basmati rice is best eaten when it's not too plump, and not too soft. But that's my preference. It's nice to hear a westerner eating rice every day. When I went to the UK last year during winter time, I was amazed to see almost all the Chinese restaurants had very long queue.

I used to eat rice twice a day, but when I married my husband (from the west), I only eat it once a day but not everyday now. Maybe like 4 times a week. It is part of adjusting to my better half's preferences and tastes and frankly I have no complaints. I even got him converted into loving those rice cakes from glutinous rice wrapped and cooked in banana leaves.

Yes, it is understandable that you don't eat rice everyday. Same thing happens to my friends who are married to westerners. You do have to adjust right. I think if I am in your situation, I would do the same thing. There's nothing wrong eating pizza, burger, spaghetti and etc once in a while *smile*. I love eating those food too, but only once in a while.

I used to love rice, but, I don't know, somehow I feel out of love with it. Not to say I won't eat it, but I don't feel like I want it as much as I used to - go figure. I do love a dish here in the states that is rice and "wild rice" which is related, but not directly to the Asian style of rice. I could eat that for just a meal itself, but then again, I'm pretty boring when it comes to food... Of course, being allergic to corn and other foods can make me hard to find things sometimes.

Usually those who want to reduce their weight will skip rice from their meals. But really, without rice it feels like something is missing in my life *laugh*.

I can't imagine having my meal without rice on my platter. and yes! I am asian LOL, Rice is the most important food aside from viand in most asian cultures. I tried eating bread once like in western cultures, but it didn't satisfy my stomach and in fact, it made my apetite worse. I can't imagine eating without rice.
