Do you use public transportation?

Where I live most average earners use public transportation to work either the bus, train or motorcycle taxis.I use the bus as it is cleaner and less crowded and more convenient. With public transportation comes the challenges of the person you share a seat with as some people have funny behaviors. What is your experience?

I do, but not all the time. I usually go by car or bike. It all depends on how far I will be going or how the traffic is. If it's just a small errand I just usually take either bus or jeepney.

It's uniquely found here in the Philippines and has been the common mode of public transportation in major thoroughfares for decades now. They're colorful and all but they're also the number one cause of air and noise pollution in the metro.

Here in the Philippines, my experience is the same common to all people riding on a public passenger jeepney experience, that if you sit at the back most portion of the jeepney driver, you are not only a passenger but you're also acting like a jeepney conductor who helps collect passenger's fare fee to the hand of the driver. But if you sit on the back portion of the jeepney, there's a big chance for a passenger to be a victim of a cellphone snatching or other updated bad modus operandi. It is better to be aware and alert whenever riding a public passenger jeepney.

Yes, because at the back portion of the jeepney is prone to those bad people since all of the passengers accommodating the public vehicle are all facing to the fore part portion of the jeep, and your seatmates will not easily notify if you're sitting at the back seat. Regarding reduction of fare is none, since it is a basic initiative of the Filipinos to help pass the fare fee of the passenger to the driver's hand... And to help pass back if there's a money change excess fee from the hand of the driver back to the hand of the passenger who own's that change. The passenger who are not required to pay fee or by consideration is the passenger who are standing at step ladder at the back of the jeepney (if there's no available seats inside) To take note that passenger jeepney always travel in over-loading of passengers. Especially in the provinces, where lot's of passengers standing at the back and at the side portion of the jeep, an extension of a bench wooden seat at the center of the passenger jeep, and a group of passengers and baggages found at the roof of the jeepney.

Mantis that sounds like a dangerous experience to sit at the back . Do you get a reduction of fare for acting as a conductor?

I seldom do. I live in a country where everybody has at least 1 bike. I go by bike as much as possible or walk. Only if I need to go far I will take my car. I seldom go by bus since 1 person going by bus cost way more as going by car and even paying money to park. I still have a card for the train. If I buy a ticket I get it 40% cheaper but even then it cost me way more as going by car. Esp. if we go with the whole family. Public transport is very expensive over here, no seats, dirty trains, always delays.

Your country must have a low rate of air pollution plus you get to have a good exercise by walking or biking.

I always do ride with any kind of public vehicle, sometimes i have trouble with the drivers not with my fellow passengers. Abusive driver who never give exact change in your fare.

That should not be allowed for the driver to not give you your exact change. In future make sure that you have the exact fare before you board the bus.

I have an experience when I rode a bus. There were group of friends that time and they used to bully one of their friends because he was sleeping. i laughed at them because they have a pen and they wrote "I love boys" on his arm. haha! I still laugh when I remember that day.

I tried the train for a while but as patient as I am I gave up because our trains are slow and overcrowded So I see what you mean Kris, are your trains overcrowded and on time?

In the past, i used to travel by train because it is cost effective but nowadays i don't prefer it. It is slow and it doesn't drop me to my destination. Trains are good especially when you need to watch beautiful features. The good thing with trains is that there traveling timetable is fixed therefore minimal delays are expected.

When i didn't have my license I used to walk or taking the lats bus. I liked the bus because as you say not as many people take it and you can sit by yourself if you want too. I have my licenese and a car now so I don't have to rely on transportation anymore, it's a wonderful feeling as well.

Jeepneys has been a part of my life. I have no complain about it except from that huge smoke belching in the metro -_-") The worst thing that can happen to me as I commute is taking MRT. That really sucks to know that there's everyone pushing you into and squeezing in just to make it in -_-")

I seldom use public transportation. but of course there are instances that I cannot avoid using public transport. usually I took a cab/taxi when I am in a rush and train also as it is more convenient without the hassle of traffic.

Jaiho, I agree that the train is convenient as it avoids traffic and hope that it does not develop a problem as it can be stuck for a long time.

I use public transport too. I had an experience just last weekend. I spent the weekend with my sister and her family in Surigao City which is very far from my place. I attended a seminar in Cagayan de Oro City which is 8 hours away from Surigao City by bus. Since my sister is living there, I decided to go after the seminar. My travel started at 1:00 pm more or less, then I arrived there at past 9:00 pm already. I rode 2 buses. 1st was from CDO to Butuan City, then in Butuan I changed bus for Surigao City. My travel was smooth and I had no problem. I went to the restrooms whenever the bus dropped at a bus station. Then in coming home, I started travelling at 4pm on Sunday, and arrived in Butuan City at 7:00 pm, then the bus for CDO left at 8pm and arrived in CDO at past 1am Monday. Then I went to the westbound terminal and there the bus left at 2:30 am. During my travel there I happened to sit beside a big man. I felt uncomfortable because whenever he was about to sleep, his body tend to fall at me. I was supposed to sleep but I was disturbed. So that was going on until the bus arrived at the sea port at around 5:00 am more or less where we boarded a barge. That is really a great discomfort and among the disadvantages of using public transport.

Wow Pahak that's so many hours in the buses at least you reached your destination. Maybe the big man was really tired but its just annoying when it happens.

Hi, when i lived in the city i only took public transportation, sometimes it was crowded but id wait for the next one but there were a lot of smelly people on the bus. everybody takes it and you get all types of people but it was very economical. a girl ate an orange on the train once and the smell was so strong!! not bad, but annoying and a bit inconsiderate. but now im living in a smaller town and the bus is just getting a route up to my place, when it does ill be sure to get a bus pass but right now i drive.

I agree with you Monkmano, people are funny in that they can comfortably eat in front of others without consideration. In our buses there are people who eat french fries that have a very strong smell.

Public transportation is my only way around as I do not own my own vehicle. I absolutely hate it! Whether is is people like they are literally sitting on you, or the noise of people constantly talkin, or the constant stops, and then I hate most of all is that some people have the windows wide open and the wind is blowing in your face and it's messing up my hair I just comb! What makes it worse is that sometimes its night and it's so darn cold and some people have the windows so wide open and ur just in there freezing. And the cost?! That's extortion! And there have been talk to even raise the price again. I cannot wait til next year when I'll be able to get my own vehicle! One of the reason I hardly like to go out is the fact that I haven't take public transportation.

I passed my practical driving test two and a half years ago. Now I use my car most of the time. If my disabled son has a medical appointment in the busy city I drive my car to my local train station and then take a train there. Before I passed my practical driving test in 2010 I used public transportation a lot. I prefer to travel by train than by bus. The train is fast and doesn't stop and start like a bus does stuck in a traffic jam. I haven't seen funny behavior on board in my home country. I am very keen on traveling to different countries. In Argentina I saw a disabled man crawl onto a bus. It was shocking and I think that poor man should have been given a wheelchair. We traveled on a half empty bus to the customs and immigration at the border. The bus drove off with the local people on board. After the checks and passport stamping we had to get on a very busy bus. My daughter and I had to stand. She fell over and it broke her mini suitcase handle. It was funny traveling by bus in Samoa with people sitting on each others laps and on luggage in the gangway.

Hello there Favouredmost. I usually ride public transportation whenever I would go to some places. I usually ride the jeepneys, tricycles, vans, and buses. I think I already grew up using public transportations. Sometimes, I also ride my sister and brother-in-law's cars but when I need to go to work and see my friends, of course, I just ride the public utility vehicles. I think I like to do it more so my sister won't drive me anymore because I don't like her to spend some of her fuel for me. I think it's also quite expensive and I don't want her to spend a lot especially when I need to go to a far place. I also love riding public vehicles. In that case, I would enjoy the air coming in the windows. I could also see a lot of interesting people. Yesterday, I felt a bit uncomfortable because I needed to travel for two hours. I really love sleeping during my trip in going to work but I was between two men. I couldn't move well because they were sitting so comfortably while my space was not so wide. I don't like it when I'm sleeping and their arms would accidentally touch my arms. I couldn't breathe well when it's like that. Sometimes, I really like it when I have some seatmates in public vehicles who look like actors. I just feel lucky when my seatmates are good-looking. :) I think I'm just used to riding some public vehicles. I could enjoy looking at the nice views that I would pass through. I could even deal with different kinds of people. I also love observing their actions and funny behaviors at times. I may not have a luxurious life just like other people who have their own cars but I'm really happy using the public transportation. As long as I know that I wouldn't be late with my appointments, I would really use the different public vehicles. They are so useful to me. Happy myLotting. :)

Oh, really? :) It's good to know that the things I've written here made you smile. I really have to enjoy riding the bus and other kinds of public transportation because I always travel in going home to my province every week. In that case, I really have different kinds of riding experiences every time I'm on my trip. I really enjoy my time especially when I'm not in a hurry. I really take time observing the other passengers, drivers, and even the conditions of the vehicles. Though sometimes, I also enjoy sleeping even though some roads are really bumpy. I really enjoy riding the public vehicles especially when the drivers are careful in driving and the passengers are considerate. I'm already excited for my next trip going home this weekend. It will be my mother's birthday so I would really ride the bus for me to be able to meet her. Have a nice day to you Favouredmost. :)

I use public transports in going to different places coz it is less expensive than having my husband drive me to whete i need to go. but during important meeyings or events i let my husband to drive me to the venue so that i could come clean and fresh. we know that taking the public transport would make you sweat and all.

i used to ride on a bus because my school is far from our house. i love it when they gave discounts to students like me. But a while ago, I got pissed off because the driver went to the traffic side of the road, he was supposed to be in the route for provincial bus but he went to the public bus side and it's way to traffic, the sad part is that, i was not able to catch up the make up class i am intended to attend to.

So bad that you did not make it to take the test. With public transportation its good to be at least one hour earlier because its just unpredictable.
