Why despair can devastate a society

A quote from an Italian journalist, Corrado Alvaro, made me sit up and take notice. He said 'The blackest despair that can take hold of any society is the fear that living honestly is futile.' I live in a country where the attitude is widespread that honesty is futile and the world press have revealed this to everyone. As a result we are near to collapse and it is the fault of everyone who has cheated financially. Have you despaired of being honest because of the short term effects you might face, or do you think of other people and the future?

In some occasions, people will do things that are unexpected acts. They've done this out of desperation. The feeling of not having any choice but to do it.

Well, my dear Greek friend, I know perfectly well the critical conditions in which it is your country, and for that I'm sorry. I am Italian and I can still tell you that things are not any better here too! Year after year we are also going more towards a more black future! The Berlusconi government was replaced in November 2011 by Mario Monti, Italy has brought down the drain. Of course now this government to heal the wounds, had somehow aggravated the crisis in Italy already present since 2008. In my country, as in yours, however, end up paying the bill still us, poor and honest citizens!

there is a lot of wisdom in what that man said. No one really wants to live in a corrupt society, we lose individual freedoms that way. We also lose common decency and self respect.

Almost 10 years ago, I left a country where there was a sense of 'futility for honesty'. I wanted to get out. And be somewhere else where I can give myself, and my family a better perespective of life and of the future. I still think that there is still a place for honesty in this world. It might just be difficult to find sometimes.

I have not despaired but did feel let down many a time. Over time, however, I got over this and now I am ready to face the attitude that honest people experience in this world. But to be able to face this one must be as independent as possible specially with regard to financial stability which I enjoy.

I believe in being honest and I will keep on being so, despite what the press and the media say. One must think of other people and one's family as well as the future, so there is no point in giving up right now! One must not despair, as that could be the end of society as we know it.

It is a fact that living honestly is futile and that a lot of people are inclined to be on the wrong side. But, I think that it is up to us to change that. If people still exist to defy such notations, then there's still hope. It's up to us if we go with the crowd or just keep on living with an honest heart. I still believe in honesty and giving people a second chance. And when such despair seem to devastate a society, it's our choice to go against this despair and spread hope everywhere.

That's a very good question. I would say anyone who hasn't been in despair about the way are society works at times are lying to you or lying to themselves. There is people out there that probably never do, because these are the people rigging the system, are the problem, and they could careless as long as they are getting ahead. I guess its a lot harder to live a honest life and be a decent person. Than it is just to jump in the mainstream, and do things that we all know are wrong, but will get us ahead in the world. That's why I always say corruption spreads like a virus. When something becomes corrupt you have to jump on board, get out of the way, or overall, just get screwed. If try to ignore it, then it will catch up to you. If try to expose it, then it could cost you dearly. Either way its going to cost you something. It always boils down to is the risk worth the reward with anything in life. I thinks societies number 1 problem in the world is the, "everyone is doing it mentality, so it must be OK."

i don't think living honestly is futile as long as you do it for your own peace of mind. If we keep on thinking about the gains that other people get from cheating, we will fall to this kind of thinking. Though I understand that in reality, more and more are compromising their values and principles in order to get ahead. It's not something that we can change but the first step should always be with ourselves.
