Hello Lotters, The school was base on Cebu but they went on trip one some falls in Olongapo City, dunno why but i think there's much much more trips and tourist spots in CEBU. Anyways, From what I have watch, two kids started going to the water and does the swimming. but the current was too strong that they drown. they were rescued but too late. I think in this case, they didn't have guardians and they shouldn't have allowed them to go alone. i hope this doesn't happen again

Hello ADnileb, Sorry I was referring to some falls in morong bataan, the reporter was in Olongapo reporting this incident. some kids were going deeper into the falls and two of them really drowned. maybe they should add more feature of safety to prevent this sad event. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/video/nation/regions/09/13/12/2-kids-drown-during-field-trip-bataan

To be safe its better of not to allow our children to go to field trip if there's something to do with swimming specially if our kids doesn't know how to swim and in any cases that they know how to swim then at least don't go far out from other people site specially to the teacher they've been with though if ever my child is too young to go then i want someone to accompany her though if they are adult already or college or high school then always remind of not to go to the middle and be just contented in the side or always be with the crowd and not to be alone, some of them probably are boyfriend and girlfriend thing trying to be far from the crowd to be alone and the things happened there's no one to help them.

Hello Homehoppers, I remember going to Subic Bay and it's beaches but i didn't went far because the water can be so dept. I think when your on the field trip , the students should act accordingly with out considering the trip as a date because the others will notice it and they will guard them onwards. have anice day.

Yes, i heard this news this morning, and was saddened that this happened. When our child was still in elementary , we would always ask for the itinerary of the filed trip. If no one can personally accompany her to the field trip, we don't allow her to go. As parents we should always be on the look out for this kind of field trips. Had i been the parent, i will not allow my child to go, since it's a river or a fall or an ocean and there is the possibility that she might drown if left unattended.

Oh God what a waste. People should be more careful when they go out like this near the beach and all. Now poor boys gone in vain. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Hello Riyauro, It' such a sad moment for the parents of these kids, it will restrict their other children from going to field trips that has anything to do with going to the river or falls. have anice day.

This what the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED) wants to prevent. In its answer to widespread clamor for a regulated school field trips and educational tours, CHED issued memorandum order no. 17 series of 2102 mandating Policies and Guidelines on the Conduct of Field Trips and Educational tours. Section 10 article 6 of the said memo emphasizes that ..."destination of educational tour/or field trip should be near the concerned Higher Education Institution to minimize cost." That school in Cebu violated this provision. Why on earth they reached as far as Olongapo City? Cebu is located at the center of economic powerhouse in the Visayas (Philippines). Tourist destinations are abundant in the area. No amount of reasoning will justify why they have to get out of the Province of Cebu. Cebu is surrounded by lush and attractive tourist spots-- nearby Boracay, Kalangaman in Leyte, River Cruise in Panglao, San Juanico Bridge (Leyte), among others.

Hello Socballais, I think it was because of charity's purposes, that school and it's students went there to give donation to poor children who are students too. then, they thought of going outing afterwards, but they were laxing in security in the river that made the two kids went as far sa that. too bad they didn't consider their local tourist spots there. have a nice day.

Oh my, that's why I am paranoid of having field trips. I couldn't understand my father before when I was still a student. Now, that I have my only son, I guess it's quite difficult to give him our permission if he has to go on a field trip. I hope their teachers didn't allow them to swim. I guess their deaths were the school's responsibility. Oh, we just can't take their lives back. How sad. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, yes. They are somewhat stubborn. I hope they should discipline themselves too. If they want to do their personal business, they shouldn't go into the water. They can go to secluded places. LOL.

Me too specially if they don't know how to swim, most of field trip always have swimming like what we do before but i don't know how to swim it by then so i never tried of going to the water even if they forced me, i just told them i have my menstruation as my parents always told me to always be very careful to avoid losing their trust to me again in joining field trip, and i never go far from my teacher i always see to it that she or i can see her and always to be with the class or be with the crowd. Sometimes students are too hard headed to still go to the middle even if teachers told them of not to go as they are trying to be far from the crowd for some personal business matter specially those with boyfriends and girlfriends.

I overheard this news on tv also, only i was not watching the show but just heard it while i'm doing something. This is a great blow to the parents. Honestly when my kids were still in school and they are obliged to attend an educational field trip i also had apprehension on their safety hence, i resort to prayer that they be able to return safely.

Hello Namiya, The handlers should always secure the children and if it's a river like that they should have consider having guard the area. good to know that you resort to prayer and am sure your kids will be safe with god guiding them. have a nice day.

I saw the news, too and I felt really sad about it. First of all, Field Trips or Educational Trips should not be done outside that is so far away from their school to avoid spending too much. Second, if they are going on these Field Trips, there should be a guardian or someone who is knowledgeable enough about the place that they are visiting. There were tourist guides, apparently, but they were not aware of the possible dangers that can happen.

Hello Jenny, I think it's the right of the parents to refuse any kind of fieldtrips if it involves rivers and falls. Most specially if the fieldtrip is by far not involved with the education they should refuse, fieldtrip is supposed education and not like an outing on a resort. Have a nice day.

That is a good point! I hope the school administrators would learn the difference between an outing and educational trip. Too bad , that these things needs to happen before they can realize that what they have decided on was not supposed to happen.

Hi, Haven't heard the news. maybe I missed it for some reason. If true, it is a very tragic omission on the part of the school authorities. They are supposed to exercise extreme caution whenever the children are entrusted to their care during school hours, curricular or extracurricular activities. If some accident resulting to loss of life or injury happens during their time, they are accountable for it and the parents who signed the permission should take initiative to investigate the matter and file the necessary claims.

Hello Rog322, It only happened the other night and it was sad because the other one is korean. the guardians and teachers were to blame for this. I think going to the river is a mistake most specially if the current is strong and the kids had no idea what dangers lies before them and took their lives. have anice day.

This is what happens when we take things for granted and throw preparation and safety precautions to the wind. We Filipinos have a word for this we borrowed from Spanish, "confianza" (confidence or tiwala in Pilipino) too much of it is bad = " discracia" (disgrace in Spanish but means accident in Pilipino) Leave kids to swim in that waterfall without a guardian or anybody to supervise??? OMG

Hello louievill, I think there was some one around but not in the water and that's how the children went far. it was a big mistake sending the children there, what a sad moment for the school and it's handlers after giving some thing to the poor students, something was taken from them. have a nice day.

that is very sad what happened to those kids. what grade are they in? well, the guardians failed to look on them or they shouldn't have been allowed to go alone. also the teachers failed to warn the kids. this is a very bad incident and hope nothing like this ever happens to other kids in field trips. condolence to the family and may the kids rest in peace :(

I also saw that on the news and I remembered the time I allowed my daughter to join a school outing. It was on a nearby beach with lots of parents and teachers in attendance to see to it that the children will behave and come to no harm. According to my daughter, after they have finished their lunch, there was a sudden commotion when one of their schoolmates, a boy, was seen in the deep end of the swimming pool apparently drowned. The boy had drowned and the hospital was no longer able to save him. This gave me the nightmares. What if it were my daughter?

Hello Yahnee, It's important that every child has a guardian and doesn't act like a teen or an adult that are fully aware of the dangers that linger them. they should always be in the place where they can be secured and doesn't go that far. there was definitely some negligence here and the parents are now blaming them for it. make sure that your kid is always protected. have a nice day.

Hello Ayaface, Yes they went to help another school. but lack of security and the kids curiosity got them killed in the first place. well, i hope they are more careful now in securing the children and shouldn't go places were they were not supposed to go. have a nice day.

Yes I heard about it and I have the same thoughts about why they chose was it Olongapo or Bataan as their destination. And it is true that there are many good places in Cebu to visit at and they do not have spend too much on transpo for plane or ship to get there.

Hello Rsa101, Maybe they have good connections and were offered discounts to those places. I still didn't believe these happened to the kids, I've heard and watch too that they were giving charity to another school which is poor and that's why they decided to have outing there too. have a nice day.

This is like one of the main reason why i am soooo meticulous when it comes to my kid's school trips. Like when my son had a school trip last year, i asked the teacher where they are going and the destinations were at a local park and aviary and the coca-cola plant here..which i did not allow my kid to go to. My main reason which i told the teacher was... it was not much educational for them to go at those places lol.. i mean i brought my kids there several times already and the coca cola plant? he could learn more at home watching Discovery channel.. i know i know there might still be something he can learn and see new things but with so many dangers around plus him having asthma attacks i did not allow him plus the local park they went to have this big swimming pool areas too so i did not allow him which i guess the teacher was not happy about it as she said they already contacted the bus and it was "budgeted" already lol.. but i did not pay as my son will not be going..and i know the teacher was fuming that time. lol but i stated my reason. if she could have told me she will be bringing the kids to the local museum i would have allowed my kid. as for that news, that is really something the teacher should be liable, unless there is a guardian with those kids..then they have something in defense.

Hello Jazel_juan, I went to the Coca-cola plant and the only suvenir was a red cup of it, that is lost now. I never knew what is the process of making coke but it was a good experience to boot. the teacher has no RIGHT to be fuming when the safety is concern and i think something she wasn't assuring at ALL. good call there Jazel. i still think the school and guardian are liable for this. have a nice day.

I haven't read or seen the news about this but I have heard if from my mom and sister. Tried to check the link you have provided on your previous comments but, it won't allow me to get in that website. Anyway, the kids was in that place because they were having their field trip. And as we all know, parents does sign a permission that they allow their child to join the trip. I believe there was a weaver signed that anything bad that would happen to the kids, the school will not be liable. The parents signed it apparently . They were suppose to go home already but they asked their teacher that they wanted to go to that falls. The teacher might also want to check it out and so he/she agreed. The kids were already told not to go to that part of the falls by the guide who were with them but, unfortunately, they didn't listen. The lesson here is, the parents should have instructed their kids to keep safe and have to listen to their teacher or listen to what others has to say about that place. They should behave and not do any necessary things for their safety. Indeed, hopefully this wouldn't happen again to any other kids on any other field trips.

I also think that supervision is very lax, and the adults overseeing the kids are very few. Or they're not manning their post, so to speak. Also, why on earth does young kids from Cebu ended up all the way to Olongapo City?
• Philippines
14 Sep 12
Hello Raine38, I don't why they went there in the first place when there's a lot of better tourist spots in cebu than that of Luzon. this is a huge blow to the officials there, handlers and organizers. I still can't figure why they didn't chose to have this kind of security when it's obviously not good enough.have a nice day.

Field trip should be more educational rather than having fun. The school is responsible for that. The school should have chosen the right place especially for kids like them. What are they thinking? they are kids then, their location of the trip is at a waterfalls? They should know first their responsibilities.

So sad. This is completely unacceptable. A child should never be allowed to swim if there are no life guards around or no guardian nearby or if the place to swim is deemed to be dangerous. These kids are completely under the lookout/supervision of their teacher. Things like these should be investigated to prevent things like these from happening in the future. Condolence to their families!

Hello Ronyang, If there was a life guard maybe they should have put a line limit where they can only swim and not go far from it.am sure the school and the travel agency will be blame for every thing that caused their deaths, am saddened by this situation. i would feel devastated if it's my child. have a nice day.
