I remember in Grade 5 my entire class had visited a jail as well as a court case as part of a class we were taking. I remember it being an eye opener for me and something I've never forgotten, this leads me to believe that it is probably impacting to see this kind of thing. Do you think it's appropriate to have this kind of "field trip"? Did you ever experience such a thing in school? Thanks for commenting.

Yes, I remember going to visit a jail too as a class field trip. We never saw prisoners but I remember the starkness and the smell. I think it was a good idea and it well worth it. Today, the field trips are much different and less of a learning experience and more like a day out.

Yes I know that schools now do a lot of "fun" field trips to amusement parks and such, this is great but there should also be life experience field trips in my opinion and also projects surrounding the experience to make it that much more memorable.

Grade 5 pupils are not small anymore. There is nothing wrong giving them information about people behind bars. As long as there is enough discussion about the matter and reason why the class is visiting those people. Proper guide and information will help the kids understand that not all people behind bars shall be condemned. We need to make the children understand about facts of life as early as we can to avoid them getting into trouble and misunderstanding- this will also help them having judgmental attitude. Will help them now better the life inside jail and the people behind those bars.

Yes I went when I was in grade 5 and I remember leaving there with a good understanding of what was going on and I've never forgotten the experience-- I think it was a positive experience.

When I was in middle school (5th or 6th grade I think), I visited the local town jail as part of a Girl Scout badge. The cells were empty at the time, and we were all joking about the toilet and it not having any doors or walls around it. They were very clean too, but the trip did make a big impact on me-I felt closed in and promised myself I would never be inside of one. And I haven't either. I think in this day and age, with so many children just running the streets or committing violent crimes at a much younger age, I DO think that children need to see where they could potentially end up if they don't straighten out. I don't see a problem with it.

I don't see a problem with it either, any little thing that might impact their decisions later in life is crucial I think.

Well when we were teens our one field trip was too a sewer plant. I really dont think any of us learned anything. I actually think showing kids how awful jail is might be a wise idea for a field trip. Perhaps it will encourage them to want to be good so they dont wind up there.

Shaggin, I giggled a little bit when I read about a field trip to the sewer plant; may I ask which class this was for as I'm interested to know? I also think that visiting jails would encourage good behavior, I don't think they would easily forget the jail environment which is a good thing.

I don't think i will like the idea of visiting jail for my child besides i don't want my child to think that there's really people who got to jail because they are bad, i don't want her to think whenever she got old that its alright to be bad since there still a place for her to stay with no matter how hard it is there since they can also get out from there(just my own though) specially knowing that some of jail inmates plays basketball or doing other things that is good to see inside. I rather want to tell her of not to be bad so a lot of people will like and love her and that being bad will not give her good with her life and that god will not accept her in heaven. I dont know with other people's thinking but all i want my daughter to think is that there''s no place for bad people and that she must be good all the time if she want us to love her.

Well the part of jail I witnessed there was nothing positive to it, no one was having a good time or playing sports or anything of that sort. It was a very solemn feeling in that jail and I think it would be a good thing for kids to be aware of ( when I say kids I'm not talking 5 year olds I'm talking more like 10 or 11 year olds).

Hi friend, i never visited jail as well as this kind of practices are not available in our class, there is nothing wrong in this activity, since kids will get a new experience and more knowledge with this kind of things.

I would agree. I wonder if they even do field trips like this anymore? It was many years ago that I was in grade 5 so it's really hard to say if they go on such field trips anymore. I suppose I will have to wait and see what happens with my neices and nephews when they reach that age.

I have never done it but for some people it wold really be a eye opener . Especially boys need it more than girls . I would not want to visit a jail ever , but I think its appropriate because it may change some one to see the reality and consequence of their action .

The thing that stuck out the most for me was seeing how lonely and boring it looked in there and how unhappy the criminals looked.

For me, it is not the right time to exposed the innocent children in jail. There will be some presumptions of wrong notions with convicted people or a great impact to children's way of judgement.

I never thought of it that way and I appreciate your opinion. So you think that kids would be too quick to judge someone just because they're behind bars, is that what you mean?
