The auto menace on the streets of Calcutta.

The street horror occurring a few days ago in Calcutta is really frightening. An auto-driver refused to stop his vehicle when a child fell off and was dragged for as much as 30 metres on the pitted road as her mother, seated inside the speeding vehicle, held on to her, trying to lift her up. The cries of the helpless mother fell on the deaf ears of not only the auto-driver but also the co-passengers who kept silent throughout this unfortunate incident. The victim narrowly escaped death. She has not only undergone immense physical pain and suffered multiple fractures but has also been psychologically traumatized. As the media raised a hue and cry over the issue, the police had to rise to the occasion. But unfortunately, it took the police four days to nab the auto-driver because they were afraid that other the auto-drivers would start agitation in protest of the arrest and may block the road causing a standstill in traffic. Similar incidents occur regularly but they do not get media attention. If the police always yield to the unlawful activities of the auto-drivers, auto-rickshaws would soon become a nightmare for daily commuters. It is high time to check the auto menace. It is also expected that commuters availing autos should not violate traffic rules themselves. Awareness camps should be conducted by government bodies. Different social groups should be incorporated in the matter to make people sensitized to the issue. I am not sure whether they are sufficient to check the auto menace but they can be tried. Have you any suggestion in this regard? Have you also the same experience in your city?

this is not a problem of Calcutta. such incidents happens now and then in all big and small cities. auto drivers are very rude in nature they should be teach the manners and behaviour.

I do not know which city or country you belong to. But in Calcutta, it happens off and on. The auto drivers do not care for the police as well as the commuters as they are protected by the unions they belong to. When there is a hue and cry raised by the media, then only the police is compelled to take action and the unions too then avoid direct intervention to maintain a clean image of themselves. But no body knows whether or not the offenders are ultimately punished.

That is absolutely horrible and something like what you've described in your discussion is not anything that I've ever heard of happening around here. The closest thing that I can think of is that there are occasionally times that parents will accidentally run over a child. When these things do happen, the individual that was supposed to be taking care of the child that was run over are typically prosecuted for child abuse.

You are probably from the USA. The rules as well as the mentality of people are different here in India. So the individual who is supposed to be taking care of the victim child is never prosecuted here for child abuse, he at best may be interrogated by police to find out the culprit and to investigate to see whether the accused may really be held responsible for it. And in this, the mother herself was taking care of the child. So the question of her prosecution does not arise at all.

That was horrible, seems like people don't have heart in their body and they have stone. On my, poor girl. I don't know what's wrong with the people that they are not reacting to this. tomorrow it can be their own child. ridiculous. In my country things are very peaceful and since we have very less population, everything is under control. Even that now I am in Goa, there is not much auto here but taxis. I have never seen such things happening and wish I never see it in my life. So terrifying. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day

India is a vastly populated country and among all the cities here, Calcutta is the most indisciplined one where no one cares to follow the basic traffic rules. The police is always busy in collecting bribes from vehicles, as a result they do not care for them. Besides, there are unions of auto-drivers, bus-drivers, taxi-drivers, and so on. The union leaders always offer shelter to their members even in their misdeeds. As a result, the police if tries to sue them ultimately fail.
