How Did People Know How to Pronounce the Name of Batman's Enemy "Ra's Al Ghul"?

You know the "Ra's" is pronounced 'raysh,' yes? I know people know (the way I know) from the television or movie. but Was Ra's Al Ghul ever in the Batman comic-book? Was his name spelled the same then, or was it spelled more like it's pronounced?

I think its more than it pronounced I guess.I'm not really sure about it but all I know when it pronounce it called "raysh..
