Compressing/Shrinking Software!

Is there any software (program or application) that you are aware of, which can compress or shrink a file, apart from WinRar or WinZip for Windows? Is it at all possible to compress a file down to as much as 500MB or 600MB from 1GB? Elaborated responses welcomed, no need to shrink that!
