We have heard about detachment in life as a kind of virtue that could help us be more spiritual and less worldly. How do you understand detachment and how will it be applicable in enriching our spiritual life?

Detachment, from what I have learnt, means giving up expectations, more than anything else. Expectation is the prime reason for hurt, jealousy, envy, disappointment and all the other ugly feelings we'd rather avoid. So, detachment has nothing to do with not feeling anything, or giving up all feelings, or possessions. Have it all. But do not expect anything from anyone or anything. That way, you are not dependent on anyone/thing for your happiness. You are not attached. You are detached. For more and comprehensive understanding, please refer The complete works of Swami Vivekananda Volumes 1 through 8. Amazing information in there.

Stay detached by being conscious about yourself first - by knowing why you are here. Then, don't get involved in peoples' dramas when they occur. Distance yourself from the dramas and observe things around you. Be strong. Don't get overly emotional.

good question but I don't know what is really going on with detachment. according to the pastor that preach in our group, a human being has three parts in his own body. The physical body, the soul and the spirit. These three parts should be feed in balance and we should feed our spirit first then our soul and our body. I do not really understand the point but the main subject is for us to feed our spirit richly as well as we feed our body..maybe detachment is related with this topic I wish I listened very well.... Have a nice day

It has something to do with not taking things that are happening to our lives very very seriously. It is valuable because at the end of our very short lives we either end up in hell or heaven. And in hell our souls die, in heaven we live forever. It's our choice.
