You basically earn by posting responses to discussions. The following day, your earnings will be reflected.
They reward quality over quantity, so you would want to be sure your responses and comments are substantive. From what I found, it helps to include links supporting what you are discussing.
You could just fiddle with all the tabs and learn your way around, and go to the mylot help sections and FAQs. That will help you learn your way around this site.
