Hot Lunch Boycott

United States
September 19, 2012 1:33pm CST
The students in Mukwonago have decided to boycott hot lunch in protest to smaller portions and a raise in prices. You know my kid hardly have enough time to eat all that they get so they end up wasting so perhaps smaller meals for the lil ones but not the older kids would make sense. It's sad some employees may loose their jobs over this. But their boycott won't change what the USDA's requirements are it'll just put some people out of work unless the boycott spread further than one school. fox6now.com/2012/09/18/mukwonago-students-boycotting-school-lunch-due-to-new-requirements/

More government intervention when they don't have a clue what they're doing. I hope this spreads to every school in the nation. Good for the kids for standing up for it. It's sad, but it's a statement of our messed up culture that the cafeteria workers are the ones who will take the punishment for it.

"getting less food on their plate due to the 850 calorie requirement" Does that mean that it can't be more than 850 calories? (Wow, if I ate that many calories for lunch I could barely eat anything for breakfast or supper!) I just looked some stuff up and 4-8 year old boys need about 1400-2000. 9-13 yr old boys need up to 2600 and as teens about 2400. Girls can cut 200-400 calories off depending on their activity level. So if they only get 850 calories that leaves for a teen about 1500 they need to get from home. What if they are poor and can't get that? Why not just teach kids about nutrition? Jamie Oliver tried it in a couple of American schools and kids adjusted to new foods just fine, especially when they saw themselves losing weight and feeling much better. I guess moms will have to pack lunches if they want their kids to have choices or get enough to fill them up. I actually think that a limit of 850 calories is reasonable but schools don't seem to serve the right foods. When my kids were in school in the early 2000s, they brought in food instead of cooking it, from Taco Bell, Burger King and other high calorie places. If they would serve lean chicken, vegetables, whole grain breads, low calorie desserts like Jello or fruit the kids would have good food and a lot of food to fill them up. Government just ruins everything it touches.

I dont know about if its enough here for the elementary school students but I know the high schoolers get the same amount and it isnt enough I was always starving after lunch at school and I am very tiny. I dont think the boycott will help at all honestly but you never know.

Well in the county that I live in, the high school lunch portions are larger than the portions that are served to the children that are in elementary and middle school. The price of the meals is reflected in this as well as high school lunch costs seventy cents more a day than elementary and middle school lunch. My children are very happy with the hot lunches at their school and I have to admit that they would have to go hungry if they decided to boycott school lunch because we get reduced meals at school so my children are able to eat two meals a day at school and it only costs me a total of $1.40 total for both of them. I cannot feed them breakfast at home and pack them a lunch for that little money every day.
