I have a good friend and he is a very nice person. We are both studying in a local university but both pursuing a different course. So last semester he had managed to get the highest pointer or GPA in his class. He is very happy and he just came back from the dean's list awards and got some cash, hamper and a clock as recognition. Of course a dean's list certificate is given to him as well. Do you have any friends or relatives who managed to achieve something? don't you feel like it makes you want to work harder to achieve something as well?

First of all let me say that it is very good for you that you are happy with your friend's achievement, the way you show it in your post :) I do have a friend like that, actually she is the topper for the whole department (I was 3rd by the way ;p) and I am pretty close to her. Having friends such as these is a plus point indeed, that way, her achievement could encourage us to do better in the future, and also creating a healthy competition. This competition is good to increase our passion towards the goal and to do better in the end. :)

Yes, it can be a form of encouragement. However, we must not take the competition negatively. Some would do that and eventually fight will occur.

Yes, I think most do take others' success negatively nowadays by being jealous. I think that actually depends on the character though, true winners will accept their loss as another lesson to do better in the future. Winners beat others by trying to give their best and improving their performance, not by provoking others and trying to bring their standard lower so that they could be better. ;)

Yeah. I have friends who are in the Dean's List. And I'm a Dean's Lister too. Haha! It also makes me strive harder when I'm with my friends. We don't compete about it though. We don't really care about what the other person gets. What matters is our grade. I don't really like comparing myself to others because it can sometimes backfire on me. It could discourage someone so I tend not to think about it. Happy mylotting!

We should never compare and compete our results negatively as it will cause problem and misunderstandings. Just take it as a form of motivation and work harder like what you said. keep up the good work there.

That is great that he has made dean's list. I bet you are proud of him and yes it does encourage others around him to do the same thing. I know that I study hard to achieve the best grades possible and when I do not do things well I seem to think of myself as a failure then I work even harder to achieve my goals. I am a graduate student and am pushing myself to get the best grades possible.

This all means nothing, in the end the question is: will your friend find a job? It already turned out most people don't. Study for years and are still jobless after 8 years or longer. I think the most important thing is if you are happy. And no it doesn't make me work harder, I work for me not to compare with someone else.

It is not about comparing our results to see who is better, it is about the motivation we get when we do see others doing well. of course, there is no direct relation between getting better grades and getting a well-paid job. But that do serve as a ticket to get invited to the interview. The rest will depends on your soft skills.

It just remind me a scene from an India movie 3 idiots. When your friend did not do well in exam, you feel bad. When your friend get highest mark, you feel even worsen. 3 Idiots just become my favorite film recently. If you have not see it, search 3 idiots in you tube for full version.

wow! congrats to your friend and good work! I have many friends got the highest GPA back my college and one of them has an award on the day we graduated. I really admire her diligence to study despite of the obstacles she encountered. My friend that time was a scholar and need to work for the school in return of her study. she is admirable and real model to the students out there :)

My youngest son manages to skip a whole class/year level because of his grades. He is now in year 10 while his next brother, who is 2 years older, is in year 11. I guess his achievements do not really rub off on his other brothers...

My brother who is a doctor now, once garnered the highest GPA in his class. He is really good in his choosen career and I really admire him for achieving that feat. Hopefully, in my own way, I can achieve something that I can be proud of. It really pushes me to another level and make me want just like what he did. Goodluck. Thanks

Its really good for you to feel inspired by that particular person. However, on my case, I have this uncontrollable envy towards persons achieving such. I really do not know why I am this, its still a good thing that I can just contain it for myself. Anyhow, did your friend really got cash from that? that is so cool.

I do excel in something, but I never compete with other people. Simply, I compete myself. The achievements of others, I just take it very inspiring.
