Could no news be good news?

Greece

It has become part of the 21st century that we are required to watch the news at least twice a day, which is usually morning and evening. So we wake up to bad news, war, death, famine and we go to bed with it at night. No wonder one of the subjects for discussion here is depression. I am considering not watching the news, listening to the news or reading the news for several days each week. I think this might have a very interesting effect on my outlook. What about you, do you think that no news could be good news once in a while?

I spend a lot of time everyday read, hearing, reading news. I like to stay informed. Specifically with politics. Sometimes I have to close myself off. I will take two three or four days and not listen to a word of news. At best, weather. Does this help? Oh goodness yes. Sometimes, when all you can think of is the worlds woes, you have to step back. Don't worry, all of that news will still be there for you. Yes it helps your outlook and your general well being. I would highly recommend it!

So you are already practising abstaining from the news for several days at a time. It obviously works well and I should follow your example.

When I was 18 years old I worked in Finland as a children's nanny. I asked about the news given on the television. It was always happy and normal things happening. It never seemed to be something terrible or nasty. I was amazed the family could leave bikes by the side of the motorway and they weren't stolen. A few years ago Finland was in the news for a shooting that happened in a school. How awful that was. The news in my home country in the 21st century can be depressing and worrying. Yes, it is best not to watch the news. You are likely to hear important news in your neighborhood through the grapevine. Getting your local paper instead of a national newspaper might be a good idea. Watching the weather forecast can be helpful though.

Yes, it is local news that affects us and that is not usually so bad and sometimes if it is bad we can do something to improve the situation as good neighbours.

Usually I don’t get enough time to update with the world news, I mean reading news papers on every morning or listening news in tv. Sometimes I get information on important matters so late, I really feel bad on that time for not reading the news papers. Sometime my hubby inform me some important news, if I react with a surprise, he gets angry and asks me, why cant you read the news at least in net, when you are sitting infront of the computer. In case of information around us, no news does not seems to be good news for me.

I got so sick of hearing bad news all the time I quit watching the news. I might watch a full newscatch maybe once every coupld of months but that's it. I agree with you that watching bad news all the time could lead to depression.

Watching news on TV is really disgusting, fearsome and sometimes you lost faith and trust to some authorities who done nothing to solve the criminality all over the country or even the whole world. What we see and hear are bad news; all sorts of crimes, calamities, destruction, famine, wars which give frustration for us who just came from hardest work. We seldom heard good news giving acknowledgment for the honest individual who made good deeds, or to those who receive honor or fame to give inspiration to others. To relax myself I'd rather watch telenovelas at night before I go to bed.

Perhaps there should be a 'good news' channel so that we get a choice over the kind of news we want to receive. We could alternate it so that one day we kept up with the bad news and the next day cheered ourselves up by watching the good news and reassured ourselves that there are many good people doing good things too. Do you think this is a good idea? Would it solve our problems or would we be just be ostriches putting our heads in the sand every other day?

Well we get the new on tv three times a day here in Montreal, and no one is required to watch the news unless you are in a career that requires it. The average person can make their choice on whether they want to watch it or not. I watch it everyday because I want to know what is happening at home and around the world. These events war, famine, etc) would happen whether we watched it or not. I like to know what goes on and to voice my opinion when it comes to voting and helping with support where ever I can.

I complain about violent films, but the news are just as bad and like you say, we keep on watching it and several times a day too! What is worse is that headlines are not enough as they insist on including every little detail they can think of!

We are not required to watch the news. I usualy on watch the sports news. My mood doesn't change because of the news or the lack of it. I guess I have alays tuned it out.

Unfortunately this has become a reality. That we have to listen or watch the news constantly to be 'plugged in' on what's happening in the world. It's a bit hard to avoid it as we go along our daily lives. I guess that what makes vacations a bit more relaxing, because we also take a break from getting any news. And the saying becomes more apt - that no news is good news.

the only reason i watch (or read) the news is for me to know what is happening all around me. however, there are times when the news really becomes a nuisance. stations show the same news everytime, though not the exact events, but something similar to it. this is why sometimes, i am not interested in what the news show is showing since i already know about it anyway. your idea is great. maybe i'll see it that way too some time. i read somewhere that you are what you eat. well, you are what you feed your mind, so i guess if all we ever see or hear is negative, our outlook as well turns negative.

That's a good point, we need to take care of our minds as well as our bodies.

You are correct, today's news is dominated by bad news. Most of the headline news on every channel that I watched was about murder, robbery, accidents, fires, disasters, war and terrorism. Sometimes I feel bored but also interested to know the progress of some of the news, especially concerning natural disasters. weekend is when I do not want to listen to the news, because weekend is the time to seek solace refreshing for body and soul not to add more stress ... once a while in a week without bad news? why not ...

Hi comb! I am also wondering about this sometime. I can also hear some good news but it seems that news stations or papers would always see to it that they put the negative things on top of everything.

problem with media is they focus on negative side of things. they should change and show more positive events than those bad news not pleasant to hear or know.

For some reason they think we need to hear all these bad things...I think bad news sells nespapers...and that is bad news.

I like to know what is going around me and the world and the first thing I normally do is I go online. We have a local news site where we get all the news. Later in the day I go through a couple of newspapers. I still remember when there was a tsunami here in India I was the first one to call up people that mattered to me. It was announced on tv.

Truth be told, I have stopped watching news for a long time now. I hear about them, read about some of them on the internet once in a while, but watching them, is not my daily habit. I used to be like that especially when I was still in school, but now, I just don't bother to watch news, that mostly are fabricated at some point. I don't like to see gruesome videos and images. I'd rather watch my favorite show or movie instead of watching the same news over and over. I think it might do you good. Its effect was good on me. Try to lessen watching the news once in a while.

What bothers me about the news is that it's partly made up and you never hear everything. I don't listen or see the news. I don't read a newspaper still the news is reaching me some how. No matter if I hear it daily or just once every few months. News is what "they" think is news. One moment you hear about a serial killer next moment nobody is mentioning it again. The queen can be news, a kid inviting all her facebookfriends for her 16th birthday, etc etc. But fact is.. now it's news, a few hours later it isn't anymore. Wars will always be there and always been there.. noting has changed between now and 20 or 30 or 50 years ago. The opinions are the same. To be honest.. you can skip the news I am not interested in it. As long as we are not able to help ourselves, our own fellow people, own country it's useless to hear/help out others/other countries.

HI, i tell you, i don't watch news because it is always bad news and yes it is depressing. I think that is why I am happy always. You are doing good not to watch news. It must be crazy seeing bad things early morning. Makes the whole day bad. Good going. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.
