The Seventh day Sabbath

September 21, 2012 7:24am CST
One of the most intriguing and fascinating doctrines of the Bible is the seventh day Sabbath. Rightly so, because it is one of the Ten Commandments written by God Himself. Is Sabbath keeping still binding for New Covenant/Testament Christians? Why? Feel free to response mylotters, your comments may spell the difference.

You are right about the importance of the Sabbath (rest). However: are Christians to keep a literal Sabbath (Friday evening sunset to Saturday evening sunset) or a spiritual Sabbath? How do you understand Romans 10:14? Romans 10:4 King James Version (KJV) 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. How do you understand Colossians 2:14,16? Colossians 2:13-16 King James Version (KJV) 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: How do understand Hebrews 4:4-11? Hebrews 4:9-11 King James Version (KJV) 9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

The Sabbath has always been misunderstood; 1. The Jews before Christ appeared. 2 Chronicles 36:20-21 King James Version (KJV) 20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:21 To fulfil the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years. 2. During Jesus' ministry. John 9:16 King James Version (KJV) 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. 3. Today. The Sabbath is every day. What do we have rest from? From our wicked works but we can do the work of God every day. There is no longer a literal Sabbath (one special day). Hebrews 4:9-10 Amplified Bible (AMP) 9 So then, there is still awaiting a full and complete Sabbath-rest reserved for the [true] people of God; 10 For he who has once entered [God’s] rest also has ceased from [the weariness and pain] of human labors, just as God rested from those labors [a]peculiarly His own. The true Sabbath is doing anything that displeases God, that is wicked things, and filling each day with activities that please God. That's what Jesus did. That's what we should o every day of our lives. We can learn all we need to know from Jesus. How did he spent his life?

Hi! No, I don't have any particular guidelines to help me decide how to understand a Scripture or a word. I allow the Bible to tell me. Here we are discussing the Sabbath. So I have to look at all the verses where the word Sabbath appears and see what the verse is saying. I guess, the main guideline is to stick to what the Bible is actually saying and not bring in teachings that are not found in the Bible. Also to never twist a Scripture. Let the Scripture speak and follow what it says regardless of what others are saying.

Hello 1hopefulman, greetings. All your interesting questions need interesting answers as well. And I am more than willing to do that for you. But first, I would like to hear from you if you have some Rules or Guidelines in saying a bible word/verse/verses is literal, spiritual, symbolic or otherwise. From there we can meet halfway. Remember, this this my previous question/request from you. It really is very hard if not impossible to reach to an agreement when are saying/looking at different directions.

First of all, if a person certainly has faith in the Word of GOD, I think it should be clear by now that no works are necessary to attain salvation since salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, it is a free gift :). Even though the Sabbath law is in the 10 commandments, it should be clear that it's not a "moral law" just like the numerous ceremonial laws in the Old Testament. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the commandments. Lastly, in the end of the day, salvation is what matters, and all we have to do is just to repent our sins and accept Jesus Christ as our GOD and Saviour.

Hello Ghajini greetings. Your comment is very much appreciated. However, your last phrase of the last sentence, boggles my mind. I have no problem accepting Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord, but what sins do I have to repent? Can you enumerate please.

I think it's important to keep the Sabbath, God gave it to us for a day of rest and to honor Him and I believe it is still binding. Jesus kept the Sabbath and if we are followers of Him then we need to keep it also.

Yes, the sabbath is important. But how did Jesus keep the Sabbath? How should we keep the Sabbath? Tell us what you have learned about how to keep the Sabbath?
