What do you see when your eyes are closed?

I've wanted to start this discussion for a long time, but I only think about it normally when I'm in bed, either when I'm waiting to fall asleep or trying to wake up. I spent a lot of time in bed before I fell asleep last night because I had an unplanned meeting with a cement slab while walking to my car to get something yesderday. I landed on my cheek and knee and tried to break my fall with my arms, so I'm really quite fortunate I didn't break any bones. I got by with some aches and some scrapes, but the whole thing made me very tired, so I went to bed four hours earlier than usual. Then I still couldn't fall asleep. I also spent most of the morning in bed trying to sleep but it was more like a series of short naps. The result was that my eyes were closed a lot when I wasn't sleeping and I started thinking about what I saw, what I usually see when my eyes are closed, and then I wondered if others see the same sorts of things. Sometimes I see blackness. Sometimes I see red or black backgrounds with floating spots of light or darkness, depending on whether I'm in a dark place or not. Sometimes I see something like fractal designs. Sometimes I see images of places I've taken pictures of, almost as though they were pictures. What do you see when your eyes are shut?

I am sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant meeting with a cement slab last night, but I am glad to know that you are fortunate not to have broken any bones. Well, my mother sometimes has a fall not far from where she lives while walking even though she walks very slowly. This spring, my mother had a fall and hurt her leg. Fortunately, she was walking with my elder sister and my mother went home with the help of my sister. When I close my eyes, sometimes I also seem to see something that I see when I open my eyes. It could be anything that I see. Take care, bagarad.

hi bagarad the great one must indeed have been looking out for you when you hit that c oncrete slab . I ha ve had two f alls myself in the past five years. one I too m et a concrete slope behind my favorite restaurant but I threw my left arm out to break the fall I guess and instead smashed my shoulder. I ended up in ER and then in surgery as the bones were so crushed they had to do a shoulder joint replacement. so I spent almost a m onth in rehab. today I still have only limited use of myleft arem despite all the physical therapy. the other fall was a y ear ago this past valentines day. this time I did not see the pool of spilled coffee on dark brown highly polished tile in front of the elevator, I fell face down s o quickly i could not even break my fall. the only broken bones was my nose and my cheekbones but I really twisted my knee and I could not even walk on it as the pain was unbearable. back to rehab again this time the staff were new and really wonderful and I really was grateful to the physical therapist who helped me recover the use of my right knee.,. I don't think people realize that spilling fluid on a tile floor and leaving it poses real hazards for unwary walkers. I am so glad you did not have any bad breaks or twisted tendons. God must have been looking out for you.

I'm rereading these older discussions today and copying what I want from them. I had forgotten all about my fall, and I now realize how lucky I was. It may be part of the reason I may need surgery in the future, but it could have also paralyzed me on the spot if my neck had been impacted more. I have bone spurs that are almost touching my spinal cord in my neck. One fall or other mishap that puts my neck in the wrong position could do me in --unless I have the surgery. I find out whether the surgeon recommends it next month. I agree God must have been looking out for me. I'm glad you had good physical therapists after that last fall. Seems the old we get, the more vulnerable we are to the mistakes of others -- not to mention our own.

William, I've been much more careful today, and even took the car out for the first time. I also walked about a block to an outbuilding and back twice. I do feel stronger today, but I still have places that hurt. Sounds like you also see images of real things when your eyes are closed.

Hi friend, most usually I donLt see anything because I fell asleep easily. There are times that I can see some abstract figures and some scenes of a recently watched movies.

My husband is also able to fall asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. I've never been able to. If I'm really tired and nothing is disturbing me like a noise or pain, I might fall asleep within 20-30 minutes. I've always envied people who could fall asleep fast. I think seeing abstract shapes is pretty common. They often move on a dark or red background. It appears that what we think about also might show up on our closed eye screens.

hi bagarad sometimes if I have arthritis pain at bedtime I take a couple of Ibuprofen and it relaxes me but it takes me awhile before I d o fall asleep.and if I get woke up in the middle of the night I have a time getting back to sleep too. I am a diabetic so often check when I am awake late to see what my blood sugar is as low blood sugar will wake you and also give you nightmares.

poppy - One of the poppies we wear for Remembrance Day.
Right now, I see tiny red dots on a black background, but sometimes I see red poppies, the kind we wear for Remembrance Day.

No, they're definitely those poppies, four petals and a dark centre. The petals are a little more defined than this one, that is, there is a bit of black space between them.

Are you sure they are poppies and not big red dots on black backgrounds? For sure a lot of people see red and black, especially in a dark room when the light has just been turned off.

I see designs for cards and scrapbooking pages...I now read so that I keep my mind off things like that or sometimes I would lay awake all night...there are times when I have gotten up and made the things I see...that way I can finally sleep. So I started reading a chapter a night in a book that will take my mind off designs and now I go right to sleep.

hi just thinking as i am a writer I have often written something down late at night that I thought was great then looked at it in stark daylight and wondered "what on earth is so wonderful about that? Its interesting we both had the same experience and I often wondered if anyone else who loves to write had thought of a gem late at night then looked at it in the morning and wondered why they had thought it was a gem? I read mysteries and sometimes it does not relax me at night. I used to get up and write chapter or part of a chapter at night then I could go to sleep while I was writing a novel thats still unpublished and sitting in my sons new apartment now.

Great strategy, Jill. I've found if I work late on creative work, say past 2 AM, my brain wants to keep going in that direction. It's like getting my second wind, and my brain wants to continue writing or start writing about that new idea that just popped into my mind. Sometimes I write down the idea, and in the morning I wonder why I thought it was so great. I sometimes read before bed to settle down, but I have to make sure it's not a book with a plot. An old education text would be ideal, but they are just too heavy. I probably have thrown them all out as worthless, too. I tended to hang on to my literature and history texts, but they are also pretty heavy, so I try to read something inspirational.

I do most of my Yoga classes with my eyes closed. This is a special joy for me because I can see all the colors of my classmates, They are full of bright reds, deep blues and greens. These are what I see with my eyes closed.

I am not judging any individual I am just enjoying the energy of the class as a whole. If I were to center on any one of them without their permission I would feel uncomfortable.

I hope you're okay from that fall. Take care of yourself. I see different colors and shapes when I close my eyes. I also have had sleep nights where they were short naps as well. I sometimes wonder when I am trying to fall asleep if there is a way I could go back in time in my dreams. I try to set it up, but I can never remember my dreams. But you're not alone with what you are seeing.

I know, it never happens for me when I am awake with my eyes closed. But I can think about years ago. I just wish I could have a dream taking me back then. It would be nice to have at least an hour to relive those days. Even if it is only a dream. Maybe I need that little bit of revisiting. Sometimes I think that having that happen will make it easier for me to go forward. Anyway. I am happy to hear you are feeling better and getting around.

We think about some strange things at times. When I close my eyes, I usually see black with blurry lights of various colors, but sometimes I see other things, like rushing water or parched earth, usually in places I don't recognize. Most often, though, I just see darkness with shadowy lights and colors; nothing specific.

I don't go to sleep as soon as I close my eyes, but I usually fall asleep fairly quickly when I first go to bed. It's when I wake up in the night and can't go back to sleep that I lie there with my eyes closed forever and ever, it seems.

I see the same things that you do. The images I sometimes see are not those of photos I've taken. To me they are more like premonitions. It scares me sometimes like say I see a river bed. It makes me feel like a crime happened there and I'm being shown where. The problem is that when I see these things I have no idea where they are actually at! If I did, I would sure look up if anyone is missing or something in the nearby area. Marsha

That would b e disturbing. Sometimes what I see are sort of like dream scenes instead of places I've really been. I just read that it might be a type of hallucination caused by medications I take sometimes. Last night I had taken both a Vicodin and a sleeping pill, and either could have caused that phenomenon. It's like dreaming when you're awake.

I usually see just the blackness with the spots moving around like you if it is at nighttime. My sleep patterns are so screwed up that sometime I'm going to sleep in the daytime so then I see whiteness with the spots. But the other night I had been playing solitaire on a game sight and when I was trying to fall asleep, I kept seeing the cards falling. Now isn't that weird?

hi yoyo and bagarad when I am very tense or upset and sleep iwill h ave the same awful nightmare thats so real. I wm in a cafe with girl f riends and they decide they will mee t me at jC PENNYS after they visit a bit more.okay so far then I leave the cafe'and n oeverythings wrong, the streets are not familiar and I cannot find the Jc.Pennys that was always in Rapid City S.d.so I kept walking and stopping people and asin where is J;C pennys and they'would ask You m ean in P hoenix? I would snap no there in RapidCity. they would look at me like I was craz y and just walk away.,soon I came to an area where huge machines were digging fo undations for a mall I guess.. anyway I found a business building and walked 'in to use the phone if they let me. they said go ahead and so I called a cab.,I told the driver I needed to get to Jc.Pennys"He asked in Tempe or Phoenix.I screamed no no Rapid city. then I woke up,I was safe and not lost but I was not in Rapid city but Tempe Arizona where we lived then. I had not been in Rapid city for years.I guess there was some strain in my mind about being in Arizona or my marriage which my dad has not approved ofl

The brain has a lot to do with what the eye sees, open or shut. So it's not strange at all that if you've been thinking about cards, you will see cards falling. The rest of what you see seems pretty normal, too.

Hi bagarad Normally I dont fall asleep as soon as I am on the bed. So before I fall asleep, I think about what I did the entire day and how could I make it better. If I dont fall asleep by the end of this I start thinking of the next day and even how to make things better for me. So in effect, I get to see some images from the day that was and the day that might be. I find it difficult not to do this and see the emptiness or the blackness around when I close my eyes. And to worsen, if I have nothing to think about, after a while of blackness, the past nightmares start surfacing.

I see darkness too and sometimes a light like a falling star but only if I close my eyes very well. People did say I sleep with my eyes partly open which can be a reason why just a little bit light in my bedroom is annoying to me and why my eyes are so swollen. Most of the time I see nothing since I fall asleep straight away and if I can't sleep for longer I have my eyes wide open.

You're lucky you can fall asleep so fast. It seems to take me forever most nights. I also wake up slowly when I can. I lie and listen to the radio with my eyes closed until I feel more like facing a new day. But I don't have to get up and go to work somewhere else and can keep my own schedule now. It didn't used to be that way.

Hello, I can never fall asleep fast enough. But when i close my eyes i have been so fascinated by the colors that i see that i focus on the back of my eye lids so much that i can see shadows moving from left to right or right to left. I think its the blood flowing through my veins in my eye lids. It so cool to me. Back when i was younger i would always see figuers of people. Mostly Jesus. And a lot of white lines that were like shooting stars in space but without any other stars in the sky. Its so cool to me.

When I close my eyes I see and envisage the past, and all the negativity the past brings up, I cannot settle my mind or comfort it, and I find hard to try and bring up the good things that have happened. I was once recommended to go to meditation, to help and to relax my mind and be at one with myself, but I just couldn't concentrate or stop the voices in my head and the vivid images that my mind would conjure up when my eyes were closed. That is why I find it hard to relax just by shutting my eyes, so I leave this for when I sleep, but even in sleep the dreams can be disturbing at times.

Thank you I will certainly try that, I do not believe in God per se, however I can still be thankful to the universe. It is easy to take so much for granted, from walking to seeing, and to count the blessings we do have.

I'm sorry you struggle with that. As a Christian, when those thoughts that overwhelm me rise up to frighten or discourage me, I can talk to God about it and ask him to help me trust him and think about what is good. Then I begin to count my blessings until I fall asleep. That brings to mind all that is good in my life -- the roof over my head, the fact I have good food to eat daily, most of my body parts working well, etc, etc. That brings me the peace I need to sleep as I remember that God has forgiven my sins and he controls my future, and that he is my advocate.

Even those images that you see could be interpreted the 'Reiky way' I suppose? When I was just initiated into this therapy I used to pay a lot of attention to the images I could see but as is the case with anything its newness is worn out and now I hardly pay attention. But for the other aspects of Reiki I fully believe in its healing power.
