What would you do with a co-worker who prefers to work, even with sore eyes?

I had this very industrious co-worker who was already told by our company physician to go home earlier today as he has sore eyes. It could possibly transmit to other co-workers and so he was asked to go home. He prefers to stay as he has lots of deadline coming for the week and he still plan to come in to office the coming days (he told us). Me and my seatmate are very uncomfortable about it, and we plan to talk to our Head so this sick co-worker will be forcibly sent home! Would you do the same? Or just ignore that someone who has sore eyes is around you all the time?

Even though he probably needs the money I would report him. If the physician says it can transmit than he becomes a liability. Are you willing to get sore eyes if you don't report him? Risking that you will be out of work for a while.

I will do the same. I am sure that the company can extend his deadline given his predicament, but I don't think they will let the virus even further in the work place. I do undertsand the need for some people to work extra hard, but let's hope they are not that selfish to endanger the health of their co-workers just because they want to do a good job.

Yeah because most companies are willing to work with the employee if the employee trusts in the company. Hope all works out(:

Thanks for the responses. Guess what? This co-worker of mine still came in today! We are really worried now so we talked to the Boss, and the Boss talked to him. He promised to really just finished everything today, since he is already here, but he said he will be on sick leave tomorrow. So we are still paranoid today.

That co-worker sound like a person with no life outside the work place . I think most people get pay for sick day so he is just being greedy or he is lonely . I would not have done what he did , and I would not want him around me at that time .

He did report for work the following day and so we have to talk it out with our Head. Well you know, deadlines are deadlines, and they can't be moved just because a person is sick.

Oh I certainly understand that he got deadlines but he also need to understand that sore eyes are contagious. He couldn't put a risk that all of you at the office will have sore eyes in a few days time. Probably, he can work at home. Your head should talk to him about that. He might put all the tasks in delay mode if all of you will get sick. Having sore eyes are painful and very discomforting, I think he would also have difficulty working after all.

That is exactly what we want him to do. To work at home if needed. We talked to the Head today as he still came in! And we are all paranoid already. He promised NOT to come in tomorrow, so hopefull he will keep his words!

I would assume that you are talking about pink eye or some other kind of eye infection that is contagious. This would be something that would bother me to a certain extent, but if I was dealing with only adults it wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal to me as it would be if I was working with children. The reason that I say this is because of the fact that I tend to believe that adults are less likely to rub their eyes and not think about keeping their hands clean. Thus, with adults, I believe that there is less chance of transmitting the disease.

Well he better take a leave to rest but if he still insist to go to work, I guess he just better be away from the others for a while as long as he has sore eyes to avoid other office mate get sore eyes too. He just meeting some deadlines as you have said so he will really insist to go to work.

Guess What? He still did appear in the following day and so we talk to our Head and our Head in turn talk to him. So he is on leave now.
