I want to learn Martial Arts

Philippines

Guys, I have always wanted to learn Martial Arts. Even when I was still young but i don't have the guts to go to martial arts school since I was so shy back then. And now, I feel kinda... hmm... regretting the fact that i wasn't able to learn martial arts way back when i was still around 10 above years old :( I am now in early 20's and still wanted to learn MArtial Arts. Do you think it still not too late for me to go to a martial art school? And what martial arts do you guys prefer for defense and offense? :D Karate has a lot of counting. I like taekwondo since it uses feet and legs more often, I also like aikido since it is more on defense. Judo is kinda like a bully type of martial arts, more on carrying the opponent and smash in the floor (i think) :) So any suggestions guys? (T^T) I am from Philippines by the way.

It's never late in learning. Do what you want while you still can. And I think Aikido will be good for you. Because its not for fighting but for defense. Especially if you're working away from home. It will grant your dreaming martial arts and will keep you safe from harm as well. I also want to learn martial arts, but I really dont have time. Maybe I'll just pass my dream to my daughter. haha.

Hey great to hear that u always wanted to learn Martial arts. It is a very good way of self defense and u can also use it while emergency conditions. I think Taekwondo and Karate are the best possible martial arts that one can learn at any age. To be very honest, martial arts is not restricted for any age. The ones who wanted to pursue a career in martial arts should start at an early age and for those who wanted to learn self defense can try it at any age. Go for it! What say?

Great thought then why not join the class if you are girl then it is most important to self defend. Now cruel mans or boys more exist in the world. So I think Karate a marital art is good. Ohhh you are only 20 not late I am 37 but want to learn but here in small town no class for karate.

Yes, it is an advantage to learn martial arts at an early age. But there is no age limit if you really want to learn. There are many martial arts schools here in the Philippines but most are concentrated here in Metro Manila and Luzon. If you're really interested, the links below might help: http://www.ehow.com/list_6077289_martial-arts-schools-philippines.html http://www.ehow.com/list_6645365_martial-art-training-courses-philippines.html Kudos and Mabuhay!

You should just go and do it! If you are so shy as I was do some workout at home first than go train at gym! You don't need to fight at Mua-thay if they want to fight with you! You can just say no and they will turn to other side :)

It's not too late to learn martial arts. Sure, the muscle of an adult person is a bit to stiff but that's the reason why there are different levels. You always start with the beginners level. I learn Tae kwon do since I was twelve, started aikido and arnis since I was 14-years-old and I am at the level of .... I'd rather not mention what my level is now but it's no where near the beginner. I would suggest you learn self-defense rather than martial arts. When I started learning aikido that is when I knew the difference between martial arts and self-defense are. Martial arts is more on tournament whereas self-defense has no tournament and is focus more on defending oneself using real weapons, the pain you have to feel (how will you know if you perform the correct technique if you wont know the pain)and the situation they teach you (what should you do and what technique you are going to perform. Age, gender and size of the body does not matter when learning martial arts. It's how you use them are the most important. If you have learn them, use it to defend not fight.

I know this is an old discussion. I hope you are active here in mylot. Anyways, I first joined Aikido when I was 19 or 20. Stopped after five years. But after more than a decade I started practicing again. Some arts have some age limits, but there are some that accepts students as long as they are healthy.
