I'm chinese and in a month I will go to singapore to study for several years. They will teach us in English. I have confidence in everyday conversations but I don't know how to deal with academic English. How can I learn chemistry, mathmatic, biology and geograghy smoothly? At home I can hardly find any learning resources about these subjects in English? Is there anyone can help me? Could you please share some useful websites?

From your writing, it seems you have a pretty good grasp of English. Academic English would not be as difficult. Unless you are taking a technical course and would be using technical English. That would become part of your learning process. In time, you will get the hang of it.

Thank you!I have turned it over last night. It's not hard for me to remember concepts and formulas in Chinese so it won't be so difficult to translate it into English and memorize again I think.

It's well for you have such a good opporunity to improve yourself. You can deal with common live and ordinary conversation in english, it's good, you can learn such so professional english soon, just be patient and more hard-working. I think you can get resources what you want from library and bookstore, you have to read a professional book in one field and grasp the academic words in this professional field first. Doing plenty reading and writing can be helpful. But i think english is just a language, the most important thing is what you learned from an academic, language is just a tool.

Thing will change when you finally get to Singapore. There, most people specks English(of course they speak Chinese too). After studying for several months, you will get used to it. I am also a Chinese, and one of my classmate go to Canada for further studies. He went their for just a few months, now he can deal with his studies properly. As for the problem of English learning resource, I recommend you Amazon, you must know that. You may find some books in English there.

thank you, my dear friend! In fact Singapore have four official languages.Malay, English,Chinese and Tamil. And though there are many chinese,my school seems to have less people who can speak Chinese(One of my seniors said she hadn't dare to talk with her deskmate for long.)But that means it's a good environment for me to feel real English. And I should say your classmate is great! Now I have confidence I will get used to it in a few month, too. As for Amazon, there are many books. Thank you.

As for those learning resources which you concern,I think it is not hard to get, nowadays there are many university in China teaching their course all in English especially in Accounting,so you borrow those books from university students all you can buy those books in bookstore near university. By the way,I very envy you that you have such a good opportunity to go to singapore and learn English, pls don't worry after several months you will have no obstacle in academic English.

As for me i went through a similar experience. I came form an arabic medium school. when i went for university to india which was in english, i was certain of my conversation skills but afraid of the academic. I had to improve my reading which was the salutation to most of my problems. You will notice an accent you aren't familiar with, don't be depressed. In my first class i couldn't grasp what are they saying. I even regret going there for study. patient, perseverance and a lot of reading that's what you need. good luck.

Thank you, shokriw!I have heard from my seniors who are studying there that Singaporean'Singlish was quite strange that you can't get used to it at first.Chinese in Singapore also have an accent that sounds different from stardard Chinese. Thanks for your sharing, friend. I'll be patient, persistent, and will do more readings! Have a nice day!

I am not sure if you'll agree with me but the essence of mathematics, biology and geography, chemistry won't really change no matter what the language is. I mean even in Chinese Hydrogen will always have 1 proton. You'll just have to learn while studying and reading and talking in the world of english academe. If you can find mentor who is good in both Chinese and English, you'll be doing good.

Hi,tonette! I know the essence of them won't really change because I did their examination papers when they came here to recruit students(to know our real talent in math, they translated the papers into Chinese). In fact, i'm afraid it will be a hard job to remember all new academic words, especially biology(my seniors said they had seen a word formed by over 30 letters…) But thanks a lot for your suggestions.I think when I get there, things won't be like what I've imagined. And I will get familiar with these academic words.

The best way to improve any language skill, including your native tongue, is by reading. I can't suggest any web sites, but if you are near a good library, try there for books on the subjects you will be doing. Otherwise, you will have to wait till you get to Singapore and get loose in the library at your college. Always read more than they demand, it gains you a far better understanding of both the subject and the language. Lash
