A pensioner was not getting his pension though he retired on July 31, 2012. The Pay and accounts department has been raising queries about his record and this led one pensioner to frustration. this man was living in Mumbai along with his wife and two daughters. third daughter who is married was living separately. This old man was a habitual alcoholic --coupled with this lack of money--delay in the government department made him commit suicide by jumping into a well. Youngsters --middle aged people working in government department, private offices -- please realise your responsibility and work sincerely. Do not have ultimate motives and delay the process of benefit to genuine pensioners, poor people. Red tapism in government departments should be eliminated. this occurs due to corruption. This man if he was aware that government departments function this way only --he would not have ended his life. newspaper link: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Elderly-jumps-to-death-over-delay-in-pension/articleshow/16549279.cms?intenttarget=no Are we doing our duties as and when assigned to us without expecting any extra reward? Are we sincere in our duties? this is important. please share your views.

Hi Ravisivan, It is quite common in India, there are several cases I have known by news. There is no minimum curtsey to the people who are working for people. Neither the Govt nor any other authority to punish the culprits those who are responsible for the cause of the life of pensioner. Most of the Govt employees are corrupted people, what to do we are living in this Govt have a nice day.

Yugasini: Were you not online for a two/three days? I did not see your responses. this situation has to be changed., this is highlighted in Kamalhasan's movie "Indian". Why not the government release basic pension on the day of retirement. Normally in banks pension is released without any delay though other payments may take some time.

I feel pity toward this heavy news. I think government should consider more about its country's citizens. When a man retires, government should help them to live a better life instead of ignoring their feelings, and just considers about their benefits. And I think it is morally reprehensive, and I hope that every thing will get better one day.

Winnie: thanks for your response. this happens to be the first response. Whatever may be the problem with a person's record at least basic pension should be released immediately so that he can lead his day to day life. There may be thousands of such pensioners suffering and not being able to speak out also. most of them may be giving bribe and speeding up their cases.

It is sad that we can often hear some news about corruption. Yes, the first thing governmemt should do is to help people when they are in need. It is immoral to hold people's pension, and the government should realize its faults and correct as soon as possible.

I never trust government, the less things we let them run, as far as I'm concerned, the better! Unfortunately the trend is toward more and more government run everything. Not only is this bad because government has a tendency to be cumbersome, ever so slow, and corrupt, with so many willing pockets to fill, but on so many levels it is just plain dangerous to put all that trust in a governing body! (Here in the u.s. there's a big push on to get healthcare running through government hands. Yes, things get expensive as is, but I am absolutely convinced that involving government will only make it (much)worse!

flowerchilde: I am from India. I trust governments whether it may be of my country or other countries. Corruption is rampant in many countries and it is really said that it cannot be routed out even in advanced countries. In India government has been helping keeping the price level less though efficiency wise it was not so. In this case it is only pension of an employee who has served it for a good number of years --in turn his pension should be granted without fail from the next month itself.

The pay and accounts department took too long to decide on the old man's pension. An old man can't live on no money what so ever. He had a wife and two daughters to support. I imagine he had worked all his adult years and then had difficulty receiving his pension. It is awful that he killed himself. People working in government departments should realize some of their clients are desperate. Good luck to other Indian people awaiting news on their pension. I pity what has happened to the man and feel sorry for his family members.

Ravisivan, A democracy can be the most functional when the power and authority are de-centralized. Much often these days in India, we are witnessing wide scale protests against almost all the institutions of our government. This is happening majorly due to the highly centralized power that rests in the hands of a selected individuals who are distant from the ground reality and very often take arbitrary decisions which make the life of common man even worse. When the lower echelon of the executive are not dealt with any proper control nor their is any minimum acceptable work outcomes expected from them they are bound to be dysfunctional. And the common man is left venting his anger on authorities who have no power or ability to bring solutions. Only when de-centralization of power takes place, when for the institutions are self_sustainable and uninterrupted by any politics, we can see a positive change. Cheers, JaiHind

asrik11 This is a routine matter -- pension of a retired employee-- pension cannot be stopped even though charges are against an employee. why not it be given before hand. details required can be collected before the employee retires and his papers ready on the last day of his service. If government wants it can be done. they do not want it to happen for making bad money,

Ravi, sad to hear about this news, really it is a great misery, the delay in work of the government officials made a person to lost his life, surely no one have the ability to compensate this loss. Hope government officers must take it as a lesson and do their job in a good manner

vidhyaprakash: I think you do not have much dealings with government departments/offices. otherwise getting the bill settled will be a big problem. yes. government officers must realise that when they retire also same treatment will be given to them. Solution -- from the top people should change. that i think is really difficult.
