Is ten pesos minimum fare fair?

I am not a daily commuter, thank God I am not. I have watched the news last night and the transport group is asking another fare hike. And this time they demand additional two pesos to the current minimum fare of 8 pesos. Thereby making the minimum jeep fare of 10 pesos. As course all the fare will increase after this. I know, they have families to feed but are the commuters do not have families too? Actually, there are so many jeeps here and in fact they are one of the causes of heavy traffic jams everyday. I wonder if that is one of the cause why they are not earning well. Because there are so many jeepneys and sometimes they will compete in getting passengers and dragging the road, of course they will not earn that much. Land Transportation Office should do something to regulate also the franchise license of jeeps. Moreover, the government must do something in the continuous oil price hike. I hope they will just give a fair fare hike.

My parents used to own and operate passenger jeepneys and most of the time, they have to bear losses. The earnings are just mere a few couple of pesos a day but the expenses for gasoline, maintenance and licenses amount to thousands in one go. When they can no longer handle even the drivers' lack of concern to the business, they decided to sell it all. I have to agree with you that the main problem is competition, usually from colorum or illegal operators. Instead of raising the fare to 2 pesos, why don't they regulate all the jeepneys that travel in the main thoroughfares? Lots of jeepneys are illegal, some needs an engine overhaul badly and contributing to the pollution, etc. If you notice, every rush hour, it seems like all the cars and jeeps in the metro are on the road. I'm sure half of it have expired licenses and insurance.

The government should to something with the increasing number of colorum jeepneys and they should regulate the application of the franchising. Many jeeps means lesser income for the drivers because of the tough competition. I also understand the drivers but I know there's a lot better solution other than regular fare hike. Thank you so much for sharing Raine.

You have a good point in narrating your personal knowledge about this and I agree with your proposal on regulating such drivers. Anyhow, implementation would still be a big challenge for the enforcers because some of them are off bad traits also.

There is somehow an imbalance on how the price of services and commodities increase and how the minimum wage increase. If the price of the services like jeepney's minimum fare would increase, then there should also be an increase on the minimum wage of the employees. People get poorer because we're stucked on a super low minimum wage, while everything that we buy becomes a lot more expensive. The government should really do something about this to balance the economy here in our country.

You are absolutely right. Everything are becoming expensive but the salary of the worker are not increasing. The business leaders are telling they can't allow increase because of blah blah blah but look how many Filipino are in the Forbes list of Richest people. I mean, the poor people get poorer while the rich people get richer. It is really unfair. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

It is hard to decide as a commuter of course that would be heavy on my part of course. But if you would look at the one thing that affects them is the price of oil, the spare parts which they have to maintain since the wear and tear of the parts they use would not really last long since the machine is used almost 24 hours a day plus many others as well. I understand their plight as well. I do not think the competition is not a factor since I can see jeepneys are always filled up especially when it is peak time.

I cannot say if that is indeed fair of course since I am a commuter myself I would normally feel it unfair of course. I think that there are still plenty of commuters out there that can fill up every public utility vehicle there is around. Removing them on the road could mean a lot of commuters would be affected. I would definitely blame the increasing oil prices as the main culprit why they are demanding to have their fares increased. That is their main source to be able to move from one point to another. With increasing oil prices means it decreases their earnings. Colorum jeepneys are a different topic in here. Their presence would not affect the fares since these colorums would also follow the fare implemented by law. They are just not paying the government any taxes as against those that have proper papers to operate PUVs. They cannot influence the price of fare to be hiked. But I think these colorums should be regulated and penalized when caught.

In peak hours yes, but how about in other times. In our place, there's too many jeeps and they are competing in picking up passengers. Also, I have observe there are many colorums too. Yes you are right, maintenance for the vehicles is not that cheap. But increasing the fare by two pesos would be too much and is this the only solution? Thank you fro sharing your thoughts.

Seroiusly??? I didn't hear about it. It's a good thing myLot has Philippines news. I am far and rarely see news about our country. I won't be affected right now but the economy seems to be going bad. Yesterday I just responded to a cyber crime bill and now this fare increase? What is happening there?

Thank you for sharing these news. I often calls my mom and know things about the Philippines but she never mentioned any. Maybe because it happens almost every month ... i mean news about oil price hike. But for cybercrime law, I think they want to pattern the idea from China ... filtering all websites so now, we cannot use youtube, bloggers or others not allowed by the government unless we use freegate or vpn.

The Jeepney association here just laid a petition for the increase from 8 pesos to 10 pesos minimum fare. This is because of the continually increase in oil price. The cybercrime bill is another one that stirs outrage from people here. But now, there are talks that some of the questionable provisions of the said law will be revised and that I really hope so. Thank you for the response.

Oh, no. Bad news for all commuters. The sad thing is that prices keep increasing, but our salaries are not. As to the oil price hike, unfortunately, our government is under the mercy of oil companies. I hope we could come up with a good solution to this, or develop our means of transportation that doe not run on fuel (like the e-jeep).

Yeah really bad news. Because if the minimum fare with increase, the fare itself will increase again and everything follows. I really wonder why e-jeep cannot be reproduce and we could also take advantage of the solar energy. Thank you for the response.

Well, it is indeed of great hardships drivers are facing now, but having P2 as an additional to minimum fare would not be just, considering that so far, there were no drastic changes in the prices of diesel and yet they tend to act that way.

I agree with you, additional two pesos is too much. That 2 pesos everyday is so important for minimum wage earner Filipino. I hope the government can do a better solution to this problem. Thank you for the response.

Ten pesos minimum fare is perhaps not fair. I think they should rather amend the kilometers covered by that minimum fare. It would be quite unfair to pay 10 pesos if your destination is not that far. Regulating the franchise of jeepneys is okay and also they should strictly implement ban on smoke belching and too old vehicles.

The government should strictly implement rules regarding franchising and that includes the problem with smoke belchers and old jeepneys and buses too. I always see old jeepneys and buses that can cause harm or accident to the passengers. Also, they implement rules in overloading. I always see buses overloading with passengers and in fact they are already like sardines inside. I have experienced that and it is very hard especially when you are coming out from it. Also, this will just encourage snatching and similar incidents. Thank you for the response.

Wow it couldn't get any worse, could it? But I understand the jeepney drivers predicament, after all they have families to feed. I hope the government can help them resolve this issue which will hopefully be a win-win situation for them.

I understand them too but I think this is not the solution to their problem. This will just make life harder for most of the us. The government should do a better solution and not this fare hike. Thanks for the response.

Its alright if theres an increase of salary but if not then its really a problem, 2 pesos is already big if theres a lot in our family go out in a day, lets say 5 person in a day will make at least 20 pesos additional expenses in a day and what if one will ride not just one jeep in a day. I guess they must talk to the owner of those jeepney to lower the boundaries since theres no increase of gasoline so the drivers will not be pressured to earned for their boundaries. and to also limit the numbers of jeepneys since theres so many of them already, they only added traffic.

The problem really is that the oil price keeps on increasing so the other commodities and yet the salary of the people is left behind. I just hope the government could do a better solution. Two pesos is still two pesod. Thanks for the response.

ten pesos minimum fare for me is not fare of course because they always hike the price of fare but they even never add or increase the wages of citizen, that would be only fair if they will also increase the wages or income of people.
