Just came across this on AirAsia's online reservation portal while trying to arrange for my family's holiday to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for this coming Mid Autumn Festival holiday where the airline will be launching a child free zone on their international flights starting February 2013.
According to the website, it is suppose to cater to a certain group of passengers who would like to be a distance from noisy especially crying children. The airline will be designating the front section of their flights for this plan where children under 12 will be banned from taking up seats in this area and I am sure extra fare will be required for the peace.
I don't know if the zone will be anything effective and worth the extra fare, because children can be quite a handful especially when they have a strong pair of lungs. I am sure these passengers will still be able to hear the screams or cries of a distress child or baby on the flight.
I feel that this implementation could inconvenient family traveling together on the flight. Like for me, I usually would like to check in early to secure seats for the family to be as close to the front of the airplane as possible. I like the bulkhead seats where I don't have to be bothered when there's no one in front who would over lean when they back down their seats to sleep or watch a movie. It also makes going to the washroom much easier. Now, I don't think I will be able to seat the family together at this favorite section of the plane.
If you ask me, I would not be willing to pay that extra fare for that zone and besides I have children of my own where I don't think I would like to be separated from them when I am traveling with them.
What is your opinion on this?

Usually an infant airfare is 10 percent of the adult airfare. A child airfare is from 2 years to 11 years old. At the moment my daughter is 3 years old and my disabled son is 5 years old.
My disabled son has always been perfectly behaved on all flights he has been on. He has never moaned, cried, screamed or been noisy on a plane ride. He is unable to walk and he needs to lay down to catheter care and to have his diaper changed. On most planes the rest room doesn't have a big enough diaper changing table for him.
We had a five hour delay before our twelve hour flight from London to Cape Town. I was pregnant with my daughter on that trip. My disabled son was 20 months old and we got some annoyed looks from other passenger sitting near to us. My disabled son was so quiet and ever so well behaved. The other passengers nearby were happily surprised. Some of them said thank you when the plane landed in South Africa. Now my daughter is keen on keep playing with the tray in front of her. This can annoy the passenger sitting in that seat. She is fairly quiet but not as well behaved as my disabled son.
The airline is thinking of screaming toddlers and young babies crying. They have to realize not all kids behave like that. It will be lovely when the kids all sit together though.

I don't know what is it with most adults nowadays where they are not so tolerant with children especially when they are crying. These adults just forget how children can be a bundle of joy when they are at their best form.
I never thought that the airlines will start with such a promotion and I am wondering if this is one of the reasons why couples are reluctant to have children. AirAsia X may have commercial due consideration on this but I am out of sorts with it, probably because I am a mother like you that just loves children.
