The original movie was not bad. It was no blockbuster, but it did okay in theaters. Then SciFi got hold of the franchise and they made 2 more cheesy movies, each worse than the last. Now, they made a fourth. And the saddest part? I am watching it.

I never realized they made a sequel to Lake Placid. I wonder if they will repeat it on Syfy?

Lake Placid 2 doesn't show up that often, but they show Lake Placid 3 fairly regularly. Since the latest one was not bad, look for them to show the whole series again sometime.

The SciFi network seems to think that mutant animals and bugs are science fiction as well as stupid paranormal reality shows. They recently decided against running a Battlestar Gallactica prequel series.

Mutant animals are science fiction. Especially if they have been genetically engineered. SciFi is not just Space Opera. The problem is SciFi channel does really bad genetically engineered animal movies. But I would still rather watch them or "earth is really mad and wants us off right now" than slasher movies. Slasher movies are definitely not scifi.

To me, the '50's were the time for mutant animals and bugs because then we were worried about runaway technology and the possibility of mutations caused by nuclear bombs. At the time, a lot of those movies were meant to be serious but today are unintentionally funny due to bad science and/or bad special effects. Some of the mutants in the SyFy channels movies don't make any sense like a combination octopus-shark. Why would anybody do that even if you could. You don't have to have space operas to have good science fiction. Warehouse 13 and Alphas aren't bad and Eureka was great, BUT it was cancelled (and cancelled after SyFy initially ordered another season.) One of the new shows coming, Nuclear Family might have potential. The sort of tried to do Riverworld, but had they stayed true to the original story (or stories) they could have made that into a TV series or several movies since there were 4 books in the series. Why hasn't SyFy (or anybody) explored alternate histories, for example what would things be like if the South won the Civil War or if the US lost World War II. What bugs me though is that they run wrestling instead of science fiction or they run some of these paranormal shows. The worst show is Destination Truth. Here is a guy who travels to far off places that are hard to get to taking a crew of people with him to look for strange or mythical creatures. Then what does he do? He spends one night bumping around in the dark, hearing perhaps, strange noises, but finding nothing. And then, after that one night, he goes back home. It doesn't make sense. If it was so hard to get there and cost so much money and you found no conclusive proof, why not spend a week there and really investigate? Well that's some of my rant. And if it comes down to watching giant bug movies, I say show the '50's movies. At least they were and still are amusing.

I remember seeing Lake Placid years ago with Betty White. I love Betty White. But anyways, I didn't realize that there had been any sequels made to this movie. Now I have to go run and see if it's playing again. Thanks for making this discussion! Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!
