Understanding the story of Phantom of the Opera

I am not a fan of watching musical plays but then since my brother had availed a promo for watching the Phantom of the Opera then my sister in law asked me if I want to go with them so of course I agreed on it that I will go with them. I don't have any idea at all what is the story all about but it was just being popular musical play to me that had been hearing even years ago. That is what made me curious about it. When we went to the Cultural Center of the Philippines to watch the Phantom of the Opera last night I can't still understand the story except of course the fact of appreciating the musical play or what they are singing all about. For what I understand thinking that it was about 3rd party because of Erik who kidnapped Christine and even hanged Raoul so that the Phantom can have Christine. Now I just read the summary of the story and that is the time I understand the whole thing. Seems that Phantom is longing for affection since he was never been kissed even his mother. I just can't remember on the musical play if Raoul was trapped then drowned with somebody else which is acquaintances that is Persian. That is the thing that I can't understand on that part.
