Seeking any information about Miami

I am going on my very first cruise in February, leaving from Miami. I am trying to find a hotel and am shocked, somewhat, by the very high prices.
I am not familiar with Miami. What neighborhoods are closest to the Port of Miami? Can you recommend any hotels or hostels? If you have ever been to the Port of Miami, how do I best get there. I am on a budget.
Any other tips or suggestions?

Staying in Miami might be a little more expensive. Hotels would be cheaper if you went a little further north. But if you're flying into Miami and also leaving for your cruise out of Miami, it might be easier to stay in a hotel there. Keep looking around at hotels and also look into seeing if the hotels have a free shuttle service that could take you to the port when your cruise leaves.

I found a place. It is a budget motel at 6200 Biscayne. The motel is called Shalimar Motel. I got three nights for less than $300. That includes breakfast.
The area is ok but not the best. I think that it is up and coming. It is being gentrified and renovated. It is somewhat convenient to everything.
If you have a chance, I would love for you to search Shalimar Motel and tell me what you think.
Miami hotels are way too expensive for me, just me, in February. Maybe off season but not during the season.

I'll definitely look it up :) I live not far from Miami in Davie near Ft. Lauderdale. I'm not too familiar with all the areas in Miami, lol it's usually a place I avoid unless it's for a cruise or some other function. But I'm sure the place you're staying at will be fine, especially if you're just going to be there to sleep for a few nights.
I'll look it up now and let you know :)

I think it seems like a nice place to stay since you'll only be there a few days. Miami hotels are expensive and I don't think it's necessary to have a nice luxury hotel only for a few days. I looked at some pictures of the rooms and they don't seem too bad at all. The only thing I'd say is just be careful of the area, it's not the greatest so just be aware of your surroundings if you're traveling alone.
Where is your cruise going to? Cruises are one of my favorite types of vacations and I think they have some of the best food lol

I have looked into the possibility of visiting Miami but I got put off by the accommodation prices. I think you should stay in a dorm at a backpackers hostel. I think you could look at a budget minded travel guide book and see the map with the list of accommodation. Then you will be able to see how near the backpackers hostel is to Miami. I suggest once there you travel by bus and take some food with you. The youth hostel offers dorms and it could be looked at online. Good luck finding somewhere cheap to stay in Miami before your cruise leaves.

Thanks for responding. I know that you are a world traveler.
I am shocked and discouraged by the hotel prices. I am usually good at finding a budget hotel but in Miami, budget hotels begin at $150 per night. I found a hotel very close to the port that has such awful reviews I would not even consider it. No one has a good thing to say about this place. It is rated less than 2 on Trip Adviser and it is at a 2 on Expedia or one of the other sites. No one has a good thing to say about the place and they want $111 a night. I called and they did not even answer their phone.
I am 67 years old and would be comfortable at a hostel only if I had my own room. I am a severe chronic insomniac and have special needs to sleep. I never could go to sleep last night, for instance, and finally slept about 9:30 a.m. today. There are several hostels in Miami which offer single rooms.
I was planning on staying in Miami for three nights before my cruise but now I may have to stay only one night.
I am going to get to the library or to a book store and read the budget guides. I live next door to a very nice small shopping area. We used to have a Borders Book Store and I would go over there to read travel guides. They did not mind at all but Borders went bankrupt so I have to travel to go to another book store and read without buying.
There is still plenty of time but I have had water thrown in my face.

I found a place. It is called The Shalimar Motel on Biscayne. It is a two star motel with very high reviews. I called and the manager advised me to book through bookings.com. I got three nights at this motel for less than $300.00. It is a good location. I think it may come with breakfast and wi-fi. It all looks good. Next time, you are thinking about Miami, check out this establishment as well as bookings.com.

I have never been to Miami but it seems to be a very interesting, exciting and expensive city. Unfortunately, I am on a strict enough budget to where it dictates where I stay, what I eat, what I do, etc. etc.
I could splurge if I only wanted to do one trip a year but I am trying to do two or three. Thus, I live within my budget.
