Sri Lanka has lost the fourth world cup final in a row. Are they the new chokers of the cricketing world. When they lost the first final against Australia, it was against the favorites, so no big deal. Then they lost to Pakistan in the T20 world cup and everyone said that Pakistan are always big match players. Then they lost to India in India and again people were saying that they were beaten by the home support. But, today, it was their home, their pitch and against a team that had just put 137 on the board!! They choked big time. I think Sri Lanka would take a long time to come over this loss!! Cheers! Ram

After South Africa you mean. Yes, South Africa are the semi-final chokers, while Sri Lanka seem to be the final chokers. Cheers! Ram

ram --I am reminded of the West Indies team -- Wesley Hall, Sobers, Griffith -- I was in my school/college and in those we use to dread playing against west indies because they use to bowl very fast. they were the champions then and are they now.

LOL!But SA seem to be clinging to that honor and Srilanka will have to fight hard to take it from them.

I agree, SL chocked badly.Actually they took the opposition lightly this time, like Ganguly rightly mentioned looking at target of 138 they thought that by playing out 20 overs they will get the target easily. If they would have attacked right from the start it would have been much closer. Its a shocker that SL who are experts on playing on these kind of pitches could not read the pitch and conditions properly.I thought that SL will easily crush WI. i was wrong and by a big margin.

Actually I think a bit differently on this issue. I do not think that Sri Lanka under-estimated West Indies, but made a wrong strategy to chase the score. They decided to play slow, so that they can keep wickets till the 10th over and then attack. By doing that when they lost Dilshan and Sanga, suddenly they put themselves under too much pressure and wilted. Had they attacked early, they would have had a better chance to win. Cheers! Ram

Its a clear case of overrating themselves and underrating other teams as far as SL team is concerned.I remember SL commentator Russel Arnold making a strange comment when India needed some 80 odd runs in last 15 overs,he said that career economy rate of Murali is under 4 and Malinga just over 4 and these guys have 8 overs left out of 15 so India wont get more than 25-30 runs against them and hence things are looking extremely difficult for India. That just means you are rating yourself so higher that no one can match you, that's overconfidence.India had such overconfidence in 2007 World Cup and Bangladesh showed them exit gate,no international team can be taken lightly.Overconfidence caused SL to lose yet another final and hence those stupid shots were played.

i did not remember about the finals to be played today and i missed watching live. yes. i saw the scores now and i find Sri lanks have lost the match. They socred 101 runs only and got defeated . very sad. that is cricket. they have lost in their own home pitch. It is a tonic for west indies who are not winning many trophies.

Hopefully this tonic helps the West Indies cricket recover to some of the past glory. I think a strong West Indies team is required for a good world of cricket. Cheers! Ram

Sri lanka played 4 finale in the last 5 years ,but the result every know . Well, you can say bad luck but using chokers beside their name is some sort of harsh . After South Africa , I find England as chokers and Sri Lanka will come third in order . But yes , the Sri lanka performance was impressive , only problem in the finale Sri lanka con not perform in their normal way .

Off late, England has worked to move away from the chokers tag. They won the T20 world cup and the beat India 4-0 to become the top Test side in the world. They also won the Ashes. So I would say that they have done some steps to move away from the chokers tag that they had in the 80s and the 90s. Cheers! Ram

Very interesting observation! It seems like they are taking themselves too seriously. SL knows that for it become No.1 in tests is very difficult because they are not a team that normally lasts 5 days of a test, particularly when playing abroad. In the 50 over match against India they were played out of their skins to put up that 275 but when Dhoni and his men overhauled that total with nonchalant ease the Lankans understood that this Indian team on home soil is impossible to defeat. They tried all tactics and even Sanga called for a re-toss but Dhoni was only mildly irritated but when it came to the match he simply blew Sanga away. That was a humiliating loss and we immediately saw the skipper resigning. Srlanka knows its best chances are in the shorter format where their limitations against quality fast bowling will not be exposed. So when they lost they were shattered and again the familiar resignation. Doesn't look good when you see a fine captain quit like that. The pressure to win is huge but their cricket board and the people have to understand they have a long way to go come close to top teams. It is good to punch way above your weight but to be able to become winners they have to put on some weight before they start to swagger. They have to sweat it out like India and Pakistan before they can consider themselves worthy of the crown. The problem with SA is different. They are not willing to become skillfl players and look down upon the smaller sized Asians and think they can blow away the opposition with pace and brutal strokes. So when a Small Sachin ora scholarly Dravid or a subdued VVS start to play they are easily overwhelmed and never seem to have plan two.. almost never. Too rigid and inflexible.

Yes, Ganguly touched on that point in the post match analysis. He mentioned that he does not get this handle of changing captains in Sri Lanka with all three at the top Dilshan, Jayawardhane and Sanga seeming to be playing musical chairs on the post. As Ganguly said, make no mistake that reaching 4 finals is a great achievement and that does not require a captain to step down!! Cheers! Ram

Yes i completely agree to your point. i think Sri Lankans had their best possible chances to lift the world cup that too at their home ground. But see they wilted under pressure and could not even give a tough fight to the Windies. They should have done it easily looking at the low score set by the Windies. They lost the golden opportunity and have to wait for another 2 years for this. What say?

Yes, this was the golden opportunity that they let go. Of course, it is no mean achievement to make 4 finals, but then the world never remembers the runners up!! Cheers! Ram

I think Srilanka had been to finals lots of times and most times they have lost in the big matches. I think most probably they need to play cool to win matches.

Yes, there is no doubt that it is an achievement to make these finals. But not winning them must really be hurting them. Cheers! Ram
