If I enable the 'smile' option my camera will only click if the person whose picture I want to click smiles. Any camera wizards here who can explain this marvel to me?

It's a camera option I think to make people smile on the picture. You can change it to auto picture so you can capture anything. Digital cameras have face detection too that focuses on the face of the image. Well, I ain't a wizard so I can't explain well.

I know about all the options that my camera has and I use them too. I was wanting to know how the camera can detect a smile!

That is amazing. I have a face recognition feature on my camera, but not a smile sensor. Technology is neat. I can't imagine how it works. I wonder if it could mistake other looks for a smile. You should try it and see.

Hi, Without knowing it, modern electronic cameras, compact of DSLR, has a built-in sensor to detect light and other environmental conditions to make for a perfect picture without us having to set exposure adjustments and focus. It can be seen up front near the lens, the one that light red when we press the fire button halfway down. Some are based on laser principle while others use strobe to gather the data and feeding them to an internal chip for processing. This goes on at split-seconds timing, setting the shutter speed, lens focus, and yes, the automatic trip of the fire button when the smile detection is enabled on the system setting. Pretty cool, for a small package. And don't forget, for those who are used to manual adjustment, lens twisting, the works, it can be done on these units too, electronically of course.

I still don't get it. A smile is a real thing and also how much should one smile?
