What might be the reason?

Earlier girls used to have periods at age 12 usually; but now it is bit earlier, about at age 10; a doctor friend said it is due to the change in living style, the environment, fast food; the chemicals in shampoo, face creams, face wash’s, perfume spray etc. Eating vegetables, eggs that acquire ‘oxy-toxin’ from some source causes more and earlier secretion in girls. This change is observed more in cities compared to villages. At what age girls in your place attain puberty? Is there any change in recent years? Please share your valued opinion and comments. Thanks in advance. Kalyani October 09, 2012.

Dear Maa, I think there are lots of reasons behind it, physical as well as mental. I remember, in my childhood, I was not aware about all these things, I was curious and didn’t have the courage to ask the same to anybody to clear my doubt. I think most of the girls were ignorant about the same and cried when it happened. In that time 14 is the age with most of the girls. At present the children are aware about all these things through media, the present mothers are also educated and are ready to share the information to their daughters. Definitely the change of food and other habits also have its own role.

I'm in the UK and all my family are genetically predisposed to having heavy periods and starting them early. I started when I was 10 even though my diet and lifestyle was very old-fashioned by 1960s standards. My youngest developed worryingly early - she was getting boobs at 8 years old and was fully developed by the time she started secondary school, which the GP said was borderline for normal. Despite this, her periods began when she hit 13. I agree, girls are changing physiologically, but people tend to compare this to the war, when we had rations. Maybe in the 1800s girls started even earlier than they do now?

hi, yes it is true now that at early age of a girl they have a period because my niece at the age of 10 she already had menstruation spot, and not only niece but also her girl friends, maybe it because of the new lifestyle of the people today or maybe on the food they eat.

Puberty has nothing to do with when your period starts. Also the use of deo, perfums, make up etc has nothing to do with it. An 11 year old can still be a little kid in behaviour, the way it looks. The daughters of my friend are a very good example of that. Over here they say if it's not there at the age of 18 you should visit a doctor. There are girls who have their periods at an early age (which is over here about 11/12 years old) or at a later age. There are also plenty of girls who never have a regular period. They also say that the age your period will start mostly is similar as the age your mother started with it (although there are exceptions if it comes to that as well). My mother already had her period at the age of 11 (she is born in 1939), my sister and I had our periods very early and so had one daughter of mine (she is 28 n ow). Two others (26 and 22) had it way later (about 1718 years old). The first was kind of ... puber, the second never had a puberty at all. The youngest (just became 7 years old) I can tell you in some years. BTW they also say that all women living in the same house have their period at the same time. I can tell you this never was or still is not the case over here. I don't believe that the changing of life style has to do with an earlier period. There are plenty of cultures where girls always had their period on the age of 10 or 11 and if they were ready for marriage. Nothing has changed over there if it comes to food (or lack of food) except for the fact people don't get old. I assume if the average age of people is about 40 years old (instead of 90 over here) there is a very good reason why nature is pushing to grow up. BTW this is also common with animals. What I do believe is that food, toxics will influence health, age, etc but this all depends too on the kind of person. People are different after all.

Thank you so much for sharing your opinion in great details, i don't agree to-'all women living in the same house have their period at the same time. 'what i know is our body is effected by phases of moon, most women have periods near FULL MOON or NEW MOON

I'm menopausal, haven't had a period in over a year - but all three of my girls "come on" together, not always in a 28 day cycle either. Being away from home disrupts this, but then they get back in synch. BTW - I still get period cramps when my girls do!

Kalyani mam, surely the change in the life style is the apt reason for this change. In older days girls don't have lot of responsibility and they spent most of their times in their home. But now they are in need to face various things and travel various places, their food and living style changed based on the situation and lot of things will change due to it

yeah it could be the reason. I have seen girls who are big in size have it earlier than the slim ones. Yeah in my country it has become earlier for girls. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.
