Recently declassified records from the Aeronautical Systems Division, USAF, reveal that U.S. Air Force was working on a disk shaped aircraft in 1956. The documents and schematics of the aircraft are available at National Archives and 3 scanned photos from the book are made public on their website. It was called "Project 1794" and the design was done by the aircraft manufacturer Avro.
In the document it's stated that the aircraft is capable of vertical takeoff, reaching speeds between Mach 3 and Mach 4 and sustaining altitudes up to 100,000 feet and can be designed to have satisfactory handling through the whole flight range from ground cushion to supersonic flight at a very high altitude. The project was canceled in 1961 and they most probably never got to the working prototype.

It's interesting that USAF was working on a disk shaped aircraft in the 50s when there was the whole flying saucer craze and only so many years after it's finally declassified. Do you think some UFO sightings could be related to this or similar project or were the scientists simply inspired by the sci-fi stories?

I knew they did something as interesting like this! But now with the proof and all this is so cool! The subject fascinates me to no end, makes me wonder what else are they doing right now and what did they achieve so far? There couldn't be all this talk for nothing, something really existed indeed and to know something took off vertically is awesome.

Hi,
In reality, most of the UFO "sightings" are classified military aircraft prototype, some never got to the production stage or are still classified until today. The flying-wing design of Northrop made it as far as the B-1 stealth bomber and would look like a UFO under some conditions. We have been played for fools along, make us believe of alien beings from other planets ready to take over, the craze fanned by the novels of H.G. Wells, the E.T movie of Steven Spielberg, stories of Area 51 and Roswell, New Mexico.

I myself have been curious about these things ever since I was a kid. This information could go either way. I mean, maybe there was really a prototype, and this was seen by people which thus spawned stories about UFOs. On the other hand, maybe the whole project was based on a real UFO. I would likely lean on the latter. Even though it isn't proven, there are really a lot of ancient structures that is highly improbable to have been built by man alone.
