Crab mentality basically refers to the mentality of humans who are envious, selfish, and who have an agenda of making theirselves be on the top or look good in the eyes of others by pulling down the ones on the top or other people that are doing good with their lives. It is derived from the crabs behavoir in a bucket when they try to escape, they keep pulling each other down instead of just escaping on their own or helping others to escape. I feel sorry for my father, his been swamp with this type of people. A few months ago ( 5 or 6 mon.) one of his passenger jeepney was crashed by an armored van, the jeepney wasn't at fault at all., there were people injured in the accident . The Armored van's company paid all of the expencies including the hospital bills and medications until they were released. My father was paid for the damage less than the amount he spent to buy the jeep and maintenance. We were all relieved when the crisis was finally over or so we thought. Until recently, some of the injured people meet my father to ask for the refund for the medicines they bought when they were out of the hospital. They showed him xerox copies of receipts summing up into unbelievable amounts and threatened that if he doesn't pay they wil sue him. They didn't made the complaint when the issue was still fresh so my father could have mentioned it to the company who were suppose to pay them. So we suspected that somebody had deliberately planned this, and we were right, this person doesn't even have anything to do with the people involved and there he went convincing these people to make a complain, go to my father and ask for the refund when in fact my father was also a victim. It was my father's dream to have his own jeepney since he was young and was working as driver and he had worked so hard to obtain those jeeps. It's not that my father didn't care about the victims of the accident, he was there the whole time they needed him. Who ever wanted to see people getting hurt? I can't believe how this people think, how could they blame him for an accident that wasn't even his fault or his drivers fault.

how horrible. i dont think it is even just to make your father responsible for these victims. i suggest that you seek some more legal advice especially when these victims were indemnified by the company and furthermore they didnt present any strong evidence if those medication are even valid or connected with the accident. for me they are not just crab mental individuals, it is worse than that. they are greedy and abusive people for they take advantage and opportunity of your dilemma. though i really dont know what really happen, if you can justify that there is certainly no negligence of your father then even if they sue him they will lose the case and furthermore, they are ALREADY indemnified by the company therefore they relieve themselves of any right to take any further action against the company and your father. dont worry God will surely be with you.God bless you

thats right dont let them get advantage of your problem. on top of that they probably think since he is a driver, they feel that he is uneducated. prove them they are wrong and arrogant for what they think. God bless you

That's what they probably thought, but they should have known that my father won't be where he is right now if he is ignorant. I mean, he didn't just get what he got by winning a lottery, he had to use his brain.

As you rightly say, this is a very bad trait and far too common among society these days. We live in a world where people worship money and will go to outrageous lengths to acquire it. This form of mentality appears to come in two forms. If someone gets any benefit that another does not it immediately generates a shout of that is not fair. People will even campaign to the extent of having that benefit removed from the other person due to jealousy. There is also the type that you are referring to, whereby people do not care in the slightest about how it may affect anither person, it is simply a case of "What's in it for me?" I often find the behaviour of my fellow humans to be appalling.

Hi Asylum , That's very true, it is really sad to think that this type of people are able to forget their morals just to get what they want without even thinking that they are over stepping others.

When people envy the others, they will always find a way to pull that person down. Those kind of people are full of hatred and misery in their heart and they never want or like other people to have a better and happy life. So pathetic and pity those kind of people are- they don't have peace of mind nor happiness in their hearts that's why they want other people to suffer the same fate.

Hi Jaiho , Your absolutely right, it's sad to say but some of this people are our neighbors and we considered one of them a family friend. I would say self-interest is also one of the motives. I just hope this crisis will be over as soon as possible.

If this accident was not your father's fault then why should he pay? He can refuse to pay and ignore those people. Those people ofcourse can try to get (more) money (from your dad). If he pays he says: I am guilty. That is the way it works over here and in many countries. So my advice to him is: do NOT pay. Also if he would pay I would invest first if all those bills are for real. Might be they are home made etc. This besideds of the fact that if my insurance would pay out to someone after an accident (they would only do that if I was guilty) it is not possible anymore to come up with more bills.

Hi wakeupkitty , That is what we also thought, we told our father not to pay them. And let them sue him. We know that if he pays one of them, the rest will also do the same and we can't let that happen. My father have sympathy on them for the trouble they had been through but it seems like they were taking advantage of him.

Thanks for sharing this discussion. Well yes u are absolutely right, this mentality might take a person to the top for a while, but time will definitely come when he will have a heavy downfall and at that point of time he will have no one to get him up and all will laugh at his attitude. He should shed all his negative attributes in himself and think positive about himself and about others. What say?

Hi, I definitely agree with you, I hope they will also learn to work hard on their own way so they will know how it feels like, so they wouldn't have to try pulling others down. Thank you and happy mylotting .

Hi, Your father behaved with other persons nicely. But others have taken advantage of his kindness. Many people behave selfishly like crabs. They are jealous and try to make other people down. They don't allow people go ahead and give some trouble to them.

Hi:), My father is a little strict but he has a kind heart, that's why I believe God has given him a good Karma by helping him fulfill his dream. I know this is just a trial to make my father more wise and remember were he came from. One passenger even said he lost 10 thousand pesos during the accident, and the lawyer and lots of people didn't believe it. He even have the guts to ask my father to pay for it as well.
