Is there a specific cooking ingredient that can be added to ANY meal...

...and make it infinitely better? I'm not talking about the usual salt, pepper, or any spices. I'm talking about actual ingredients. Like if you add potatoes to some recipe, it would instantly add another whole dimension to make it a better version of the meal. My take on this is exactly that: POTATOES. It just makes some recipes so much better. That starchiness and that smooth taste, it's just so magical, this humble potato.

While I have only done it on a few things; I don't cook a lot anyway, I think tomato sauce would be a good choice and it is good for you. I have used it in salmon loaf instead of an egg and with canned green beans with good results and it is so easy to do. I have been using the no salt added canned tomato sauce to cut down on sodium.

Tomato sauce adds great flavor to dishes. I recall I was surprised the time my boyfriend made a dish with shrimp, mushrooms, onions, garlic, and tomato sauce over pasta. It was so incredibly delicious. He tends to be more the gourmet cook.

I like to add fresh garlic, onions, and sometimes green peppers.. A lot of the meals that I make I can add one or all three of those ingredients to make a meal a lot better.. For example I use hamburger helper as a base line.. Then by the time I am done, and the plate is served.. You would never guess that it started from a box.. There are some meals that I know how to cook from starch but it does take a lot of time and enegry for the recipe to turn out just right.. I just dont have the inspiration to cook like that.. Hopefully it comes back soon..

Yes, I agree that adding onions into Hamburger Helper can make for a simple yet delicious dish. My favorite is the Hamburger Helper Stroganoff with onions.

So long as it's into a savoury recipe, I usually add onions and garlic to most things.

Garlic is a wonderful ingredient in cooking. Since I learned the little trick of how easy it is to peel garlic by simply putting the cloves into the microwave for 15 - 30 seconds. The ease of using this ingredient has increased and I use it even more in cooking.

I cook a lot with green apples, now that I`m trying to use less salt. I quarter them and use them as you would a potato in a casserole.

Wow, that is an interesting new idea. I will have to try that sometime. I tried a dish once that a friend recommended with turkey apples and butter it made a good meal, but reheating leftovers was a bit tricky. Ironically, the friend that suggested it vows that he does not eat leftovers, so he probably never had that issue (LOL!).

It never cross my mind until now. I love cooking and i have a little restaurant so if there is one thing that i can add up to any.... menu..that would be red beans or black beans. Just make sure to bring it to boil till soften. I love the taste and after taste of that specific beans i guess it will give good justification in any cooking meal.

it's really good to make our own variations of cooking. like you said potatoes make much better for some recipes you cook. actually cooking is just experimental. if you really see that a food might tastes better then it's really up to you to add something. it's really a matter of our taste buds.

Yes, cooking is all experimental! Sometimes cooking mistakes turn into some of the most delicious variations of the recipes. I recall once mixing up spices when making oatmeal cookies and instead of putting nutmeg I put in pumkin pie seasoning mix. Well, I must say the cookies were so much better with pumpkin pie seasoning than nutmeg.

There are a few things I seem to add to most meals I make. One is onions the other is a seasoning I love. The seasoning really adds flavor to most anything. It's especailly yummy on french fries. If I could I'd add ranch dressing to every meal too!

For anything other than most seafood dishes, I find that adding some type of cheese is usually an ingredient that kicks it over the top. Even in a dish that's comprised of cheese already, like mac 'n' cheese, adding another layer of a different, unique type of cheese really gives it a lot of power. I remember I wanted to make fried chicken and mac 'n' cheese one night, but I wanted to try something different. I took the chicken off the bone, fried it, served it on top of cooked noodles with melted cheese over the entire thing. It was friggin' awesome. So, yeah, I think cheese would be my ingredient if you're going the actual food route. For a spice that's really not a spice unless you get it in powder form, I'm going with garlic.

That is interesting. I have only experimented a little with adding cheese to dishes. I agree that cheese in Chicken Parmessan and over a casserole of eggs adds some delicious flavor.

Potatoes are a great ingredient that can be added to a lot of meals to give them a different dimension and also make them a lot more filling. Some of the other ingredients that I've used in similar ways are beans (I love mixing beans and meat to make the meat go further than it would have otherwise) and rice (again, makes the food go further and doesn't really change the taste of the meal).

For me, I would say that onions can make any dish taste better. They even make eggs a delicious meal. The other ingredient that I love to use that can transform the taste of just about any recipe is bell peppers whether it is red, green, or yellow. They each have a distinctive taste that they add to any dish.

I would say that many recipes taste so much better with onions. Any ingredient that I think tastes better with bell peppers. Whether it is red, yellow, or green bell peppers. They all have a unique flavor that they add to any dish depending upon the dish and the type of bell peppers that you add to the dish.

You know as I was reading through the posts, I could not help but think about the line of the little mouse in the movie Ratoule as he was telling his brother about how putting different ingredients together makes the dish that much better. It is amazing when you think of all the little ingredients that go into make a masterpiece of a delicious meal.

Coconut milk is always present in most of my favorite meals. I am not sure in your country, but here in the Philippines, we love coco milk! It taste better than the usual MILK, but it's usually prepared fresh and you can barely see it in groceries. In our country you can buy it in the public market. Wait a minute, are you from the Philippines?

I tried a dish once at a Thai restaurant with Coconut Milk. It sounded like a good combination with curry and coconut milk, but I ended up not liking the texture of the coconut milk. Maybe, it was the curry dish, but every since I have not been enthusiastic to try another dish with coconut milk in it.

Salsa! Pace specifically as that is my favorite. I have tried them all! You can put salsa on anything and it will change the flavor, the taste and make it look nicer! You can get salsa in mild, medium or hot...chunky or smooth. I put it on ALOT of things...and it is healthy too...peppers and tomatoes and other veges....and GOOODDD!!
