I have a folder on C containing mrtstub.exe. Might be a virus or is part of Malicious Software Removal Tool?

Hi,
Right, check its properties and if it is not a legitimate Microsoft software, delete it. If it cannot be deleted, take caution, it may be attached to other processes that may create havoc if disturbed. Otherwise leave it on if it doesn't cause trouble.

Here check out this link there are lots of webpages that tell you about that file. It maybe Malicious but chances are its actually part of your OS. Good luck and I hope that your not infected.
