Journey To The Center Of The Earth

I have almost finished reading this classic book by Jules Verne. I admit when I first decided to read it, I was hesitant. Usually old books like this one tend to be hard for me to read because of the old English, but surprisingly this book is really good so far. Jules Verne added a lot of scientific language, but aside from having to look a few words up I was able to follow the story well. Has anyone else read this amazing story? I would very much enjoy a discussion about it.

I read it a long time ago and can't remember all of it now, but I do remember that it was good. If you enjoy it, read his other books or look for short stories by him. Amazon has several others that are free for Kindle. Jules Verne was one of the best short story writers ever in my opinion. So much of his imaginative story telling is based on scientific knowledge that it should be no surprise that some things that he imagined were later found to be true. Michael Crichten is a sort of modern day version of Jules Verne.

I'm not sure if I'm remembering the right book, but the intense heat of the earth as well as the magnetic pull for two things. As you read, make mental note of his assumptions, then look them up. You might find some interesting things!

That's an interesting statement. What kinds of things did he write about that were discovered to be true later on? I realize he was very much ahead of his time as a writer, I would love to research more about it.

With his book, the professor said it was possible to travel to the center of the Earth, because the theories on the subject were wrong. I realize if the theories were right the book would have ended much differently, but apparently back then science already speculated about the Earth's core.

I never read the book. I have seen the movie. LOL. I would like to read it. After all, we do get more out of the book then a movie made from a book. It is a rare occasion when the movie version is better the the book. I know this because I read just about every Stephen King book and saw all the movies, and believe me, the books blow the movies away. Especially Pet Cemetery. I will put this on the list if book for me to read.

Hey inertia I have also only seen the movie . I dont normally read books after watching the movies unless they have fairies and vampire in the story . Like twilight , those are the kinda books I will read and still only before seeing the movie .

I am sure it will be a good read. That is something I will have to take my time with. I am waiting for the new Library around the corner from me to open. Then I will go and get the book. I am sure they had lots to say, after all, back then that was basically the only media to express themselves.

I've never really read Stephen King LOL, but I've seen a lot of his movies. If you're going to read a classic, just be prepared for the wordy style. Unfortunately back then, people had a lot to say, that's why the books were so huge.

Well, I havn't read it yet. Until now, I only saw the movie. But it's never the same as reading the original text. In my case, when I get a sample to read it, I'm afraid it won't be in English as it won't be too difficult I think. So, I'll try it German or Spanish.

You are right, translations are not the same as some important points are getting lost. Since some years, I decided to start reading books in English too, as it's one of the best way to built up vocabulary and to learn the language, but I still didn't get it done. I hope to be able to start soon to read also books in your language. It's very important to me to built up my English.

I can only read in English, so if the book isn't in my native tongue I'm lost. I had trouble with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It was translated into English, but there were still foreign words I didn't recognize.

Well don't spoil the ending for me, because I haven't gotten there yet. I thought a twist was coming, but I really can't guess whats coming next.

i read this book when i was a kid and loved it. i think i may be like you as i am put off by arty farty language in books. if you enjoy this genre in the classics i would recommend HG Wells and John Wyndham. great writers.

I was thinking of reading The Time Machine if I can find it. I think what I liked most about the book was how he made the story very plausible. I could totally believe someone traveled to the bowels of the Earth.

for it's time it is very believable. the up to date movie version made a mockery of it. 'the time machine' is good fun as is 'war of the worlds' and 'the invisable man'. also try Wyndhams 'the midwich cuckoos', 'the kracken wakes' and 'the chrysalids.'.

I didn't bother watching the movie. It was the one with Will Ferrel I believe. I knew if he was in it, the movie would be garbage. I'm glad I picked up the book, do you recommend 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, or am I getting ahead of myself LOL.

No, I haven't read this :( I tend to avoid the classics like that just because they're so difficult to read. Maybe now that I'm a bit older I'll try to read them. Maybe Journey to the Center of the Earth would be something I could read and actually understand.

Oh wow, free things are always good lol. If it was free like that then I wouldn't mind trying it out to see what it's like.

I've been reading free books for months now thanks to my Kindle. You should invest in one, you won't regret it. I also managed to read Alice In Wonderland, though I wouldn't recommend it, because it was plain boring.

I downloaded a free version on my Kindle Fire, so I figured if I wasn't paying for it I'd give it a try. It's a bit hard to read in the beginning, but once they get to the journey it starts becoming more interesting.

I have also read this book and I like it. I like the most Jules Verne books. He has such an imagination to write that kind of books. It is really interesting to write his books. Journey to the center of earth and Around the world in 80 days was the best books.

His imagination was awesome, I can only hope to write something as creative as his books. What really amazed me was he even covered the minor details. I wonder how much scientific research he did before he wrote Journey To The Center Of The Earth.
