Medical Marijuana a catch 22?

So, I'm walking by the TV and stop to watch a story on medical marijuana in Colorado. At one point it starts to discuss the legal issue. Which gets me, thinking while normally decriminalization is something the left pushes for, this isn't real decriminalization, as it basically makes it a prescription drug, which can still carry serious criminal charges. I think the legal issue of states legalizing it for medical use has a huge implication for the right wing argument of smaller government where states have the power. The last time I can recall states going against federal rulings the south ceded from the union and civil war ensued. Basically every state that does this is giving the bird to the federal government and it's agencies. In short, I find it funny that such an issue that divides parties can create such a huge stride forward, and at the same time backwards, for each side.
