As Nightmare as it look, some one's gotta be accountable to this. It was a Party night and Halloween with so many kids that are going outside and then sleeps over night. then morning, a relative spotted her and thought of her as a skunk, shooting with out checking it first. Don't know why they are not sure what to do with the shooter, but he should just regret and weep behind bars for doing so. now, that kid would never wear any halloween costume every again fearing getting shot at. not a referral link. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/22/relative-shoots-costumed-girl-after-mistaking-her-for-a-skunk/comment-page-2/#comments

I believe I heard something about this but I am not sure. I am still not sure how he could have mistaken her for a skunk. A 9 year old girl is much bigger then a skunk would be, even a fat skunk. I don't know whether I'd put him in jail or not, he does regret doing it I am sure, and he did mis-take her for a skunk, but that leaves questions as well. How could he? Was he really just trying to shoot her, knowing whom she was? It's hard to tell, but honestly I'd investigate that, and if it was truly a case of mistaken identity... let him live with the regret. He surely will never fire a rifle from so far away without knowing positvely what he's shooting at - again.

Hello SomeCowgirl, he should have just let it go away if it was a skunk, besides, what's the worth of killing them if it's gonna stink the area later on? I don't think he will ever shoot any thing nor kill a fly of some sort. i think it was stupid and am sad about the little girl. but why a 9 yr old have to stay outside the house when she could have just gone home at night? shooting it right there with out taking a closer look is a mistake

At night, I imagine she was either in a safe place, or family was nearby watching her. I am not sure. Now I am not standing up for the guy, but rednecks (southern people) do shoot at some of the stupidest things, and he could shoot at squirrels, skunks, and the like regularly....

The shooter mistakenly identified the kids and he saw it like a skunk. Horrible, If I am the father of the kid, I will also shoot the shooter. Why he wasn't make it sure before he shoot. As far as I know skunk cannot compare the size to a human. Skunk is a quite small compare to a kids.

You said that because it's not your kids, it's different reaction if it part of you family especially if it's close to your heart.

Hello Julyteen, I won't shoot the shooter instead notify the authorities, we can't trade from Sin to anoher sinful act. He should have considered looking to it first before he can actually do something like that. he could just throw a snow ball if it's snowing there to shoo it away but shooting it? that's ridiculous.

Is commonsense gone? If it is dark outside and you do not clearly see what you are seeing DONT SHOOT.. I pray that this girl pulls through... It is sad this little one will never celebrate halloween the same or if at all..

Hello Sjvenden27, The little girl is fighting to survive, i don't know what would i do if i get hit by a shotgun like that. this girl won't be sleeping outside with a costume again because she will be thought as an animal in the bushes.

Hello jaihosis, I am not sure maybe that guy had some bad time with a skunk once that he wanted pure revenge. would have been less painful if it was just a pellet but it's still gonna cost him the jail. but not that fatal much to the little girl. the shotgun was just too much for her.

Oh, that is very sad indeed. People should not just be shooting things especially ner Halloween since many people have been dressing up as anything. Poor girl, i wonder what she was doing there hiding..

HelloLady1993, Why on earth would they do that, they should just do that in hunting season at least or in the forest not in the front or back yard of the house? i also question this girl for even hiding in the bushes, she never should have done it too.

Hello Vidhyaprakash, the little girl is still alive, fighting for survival and the man who shot her is probably in jail by now. he never should have done it in the first place knowing that he will be charged. i think it's his fault, he could have throw a snow ball there just to be sure or look at it with a flash flight.

He def. should be charged....he was very reckless in his actions! He knew there were costumed people around (costumed CHILDREN) and he should not have shot blindly at a "dark figure" that he saw in some bushes...not just because it could have been one of the children but it could have been a number of things that shouldn't be shot; a dog, a cat, etc. OH! And I don't see why he'd need to shoot a skunk either, they don't harm anyone if you leave them alone. And now because he was extremely negligent, a little girl is fighting for her life! This story makes me so angry, he better not get off!! And if he was in my family I'm not sure I'd ever be able to speak to him again!

oh letran thats so stupid and sill y as a child of nine is nmuch bigger than any damned skunk. He shot her and he should go to jail. this is a wild stretch of'the imagination to mistake a child for a skunk and what was he doing with a shotgun in the first place, this boggles my mind. I too want to see him behind bars and weeping for his stupid stupid mean miserable life. that poor little girl. I hope she pu ls through. a Halloween party and a m an with a shotgun? no somethings rotten in Denmark and its not a skunk at all. throw him in jail and throw away the keys.

Hello hatley, But i don't know why she was there in the first place, they have a house and a room where she can go to sleep. well, he will regret this terrible mistake of his. It really boggles my mind as well, i hope he learned his lesson and while in jail he needs to make sure he doesn't repeat it if he comes back from prison if he's released. have a nice day.

I put myself in the place of the parent or relative and if she was mine i would shoot HIM. There is NO way you can mistake a 9 year old girl for a skunk. I think he intentionally shot towards her to scare her as he is a bully and his judgement was impaired. I would throw him in jail and let him rot. imagine if she is your daughter or sister or granddaughter or niece or any child YOU love .. then make your judgement.

poor girl. i feel sorry for it. i agree when you say that for sure she wont want to be using a costume anymore. i would be afraid to get hurt again. i doubt that he will go to jail cause the girl survived and he thought it was someone bad. but still i think he should be more careful next time! we should check things clearly before act. but sadly we human beings always react without thinking.
