The parliamentary seat of Jangipur, Behrampore in West Bengal was won by the Congress candidate Pranab Mukherjee in the election of 2009 when he had defeated his nearest rival of CPM by a margin of more than 1 lakh votes. But after his resignation for contesting the post for president of India, there was a bye- election for the said seat a few days ago. Abhijit Mukherjee, son of Pranab Mukherjee, present president of India and the former MP representing the said seat, contested the seat as a Congress candidate. He has won the seat but unfortunately, the margin has come down to a little above 2000 votes. It is true that in the last election, the Congress candidate Pranab Mukherjee enjoyed the support of TMC, being a constituent of UPA but as TMC has left UPA, Congress had to fight on its own strength only. It is also true that TMC did not fight the contest. So for whom the voters supporting the stand of TMC on FDI issue cast their valuable votes? So, did they boycott the contest or did they cast their valuable votes in favour of CPM or did they waste their valuable votes by clicking the button in favour of BJP or the other minor communal parties which also contested the election? Have you so far heard of any analysis by the major political parties of our country? Have you any personal views about this decline in the number of votes of Congress? Was the result expected to you or was it a bolt from the blue to you?
