Do you think 'smear' campaigns in elections should be 'outlawed'?

I don't know about you but I am so tired of all the 'crap' that the candidates send out about one another!
Here in my area, for example, there was a run-off election for Georgia State Senator. We received so many mail outs that I hated checking the mail!! I mean it was totally ridiculous!
And the sad thing is that some people only know the candidates by those mail outs!
And what about the 'robo' calls??? Man we were getting them every couple of days!
So I put out there to you...don't you think this is something that shouldn't be allowed in any election?

Smear campaigns are one of those things that really make me just predisposed to hate pretty much every single person who is running for election. I mean, if you can’t hype up yourself, without knocking the other guy, then there must be something utterly flawed with your campaign. There are just many times where I see these people run on a weak platform, and its obvious that their only strength is that they are not the other person running.
I find myself wondering what the elections would be like if people could only run on their own merits. Without them bashing the other person running, because that would be a game changer. Alas, I think we have reached the point where smear campaigns are a huge part of the election. They manage to drum up a certain amount of perverse entertainment value for every single person involved. For right or wrong that is just how things go, but it would be intriguing to see how the election would go without them.

Finally! A response that is exactly what I mean! We recently had a run-off election here for 2 of the candidates running for state Senator and I tell you it was horrible! I was so glad to see it over and done with!
My mailbox was so full of junk...each one bashing the other, talking about things that the other did and didn't do. I dreaded checking it every day.
And I agree with you on the fact that I think if you need to do this, then there is something lacking in your qualifications to even run. Plus it's a tactic to divert attention away from yourself.
Another thing that concerns me is that alot of voters base their vote on that literature...some have no clue as to what the candidate stands for or their platform, they just know what they are reading! Very scarey!
What a refreshing concept to think we could actually vote on a candidate for his qualifications and not even have to read the other stuff!
Thank you so much for responding! I enjoyed reading your post!
