Is it better to be an early bird or a night owl?

Personally I seem to function much better at night, but I do suffer for it in the morning and I do seem to 'loose' a large portion of the day as a consequence. Being a night owl does have it's advantages though, I come across some brilliant late night t.v and radio shows, and I'm never the first to laeve a party or the dance floor. I would like to know which of these you are and which one you would prefere to be. :)

I'm basically a night person. I've always been. When I was a kid I'd stay awake in bed reading by the light shining in my window from the streetlight outside. My mother always wondered why I was so tired in the morning! And you're right, there are some good TV/radio shows on in the middle of the night. For 13 years, until a year ago, I worked the 3rd shift in a dispatch office. I was the only one there. I noticed that the drivers who came in on my shift were more easygoing and laid back than the day drivers. My sister told me she read about a study that was done on day vs night people. One of the findings was that the majority of night people were born at night and the majority of day people were born in the daytime. I was born at 11:54pm. My sister, who was born in the morning, has always been a morning person. She's very sharp at 7am, the time I prefer to be going to bed. I reach my peak energy about 2-3am. Now that I'm out of work, though, it's anybody's guess when I'll be awake or asleep.

Um, yeah. Daytime TV is definitely not my thing. And now that you mention it, I'm more creative at night. I do modular Origami and I'm much more patient at night than in the day, as this type of Origami can be frustrating. I never thought about it before. I use to write poetry and did most of that at night. My eyes are light sensitive and my skin is very fair. I sunburn quickly. So I'm not fond of the daytime for those reasons as well. Anyway, it's much easier to stare at the moon and daydream than to stare at the sun! I just find the night and everything about it so peaceful. And on a starry night the sky is very beautiful. But did you ever have anyone start telling you how bad it is for you to stay up all night and sleep all day? I have. They insist that no one is really a night person, that our bodies are made to be awake in the day and asleep at night. I've also been told that living "opposite to what nature intended" (yeah, can you believe that one?) will shorten my life by x amount of years!

Wow what is modular origami? Sounds very cool :) You are right about the moon it is much easy to look at then the sun. Fair skin, light sensitive eyes, are you a vampire? lol Yes I too have been told all about not sleeping the day and how I shouldn't stay up at night but hey, what can you do? (Actually don't answer that :D

Now that is interesting and would make a lot of sense, as I was born at about 3am! I too read late into the night and I find it's easier to write late at night/early hours of the morning too. (I don't get disturbed, which happens all the time during the day, with friends popping in for a chat and a cuppa, or double glazing sales people knocking at the door, or the phone going off etc). There are heaps of really good science and book programs on at night and really good discussions on night time radio, I learn so much, where as I find the day time programmes are a bit, well, mind numbing. I only really like the news and the write stuff. I peak about midnight for a while then totally crash! :)

Night is the best time to take rest. If you change the timings, it will surely affect you in the long run. Once in a while, if you have work you can work at nights. But don't do it always. I always like to sleep early at nights and wake up early in the morning. Live with nature.

Thanks for responding sowkrish :) 'Live with nature', that is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard. I think you are right, we should be awake when the sun shines and asleep when darkness falls. That would probably explain why I often feel so tired in the mornings and wide awake at night, I have over ridden my body's natural cycle. A few more early nights for me I think. ;)

I think that it depends on what kind of person you are, but I have to say that I think people who wake early in the morning are able to get more done than those who stay up late at night. I love it when I am awake early as this means that I am able to get dressed and get everything done that I need to around the house before it is time to do anything else. The rest of my family stay in bed later and this means that I am able to get at least a little bit of time alone before they come downstairs and want to talk to me.

I can understand how that would be a good thing, I don't get five minutes to myself in the morning and I am definately not as productive as some of my friends that get up earlier then me. :)
