What happens if by chance you wore the same dress as your boss at work? This is something real happening to me. This is not the first time. Yesterday i wore a grey dress to work. Apparently, my lady boss wore the same color and similar dress as i do. I was shocked as i did not realize it, but it was my colleagues who highlighted me. But is there anything wrong of wearing something similar to your boss at work? Will you be criticized or said something bad like trying to act similar to your boss? I really feel uncomfortable if by mistake, i accidentally wore same dress as my boss to work. But how would i know what she is going to wear? =(

hi joycseer, first of all, thanks a ton for posting this discussion. wait a minute, it sounds familiar, what say? LOL! no, i did not tried to be a copyrat, i mean a copycat. ok, now i'll cut the crab, i mean cut the crap, and back to your question. first of all, it's nothing wrong (on your side) if you are wearing something similar to your boss at work. the only issue is on your boss' side whether she is a person who cares about her whole outward appearance. for example, whether she cares about what car she drives, what house she stays, which products she is using, etc. if you see that she chose all the expensive or branded ones for everything, then it most probably means that she actually will dislike if her subordinates using the same as her. psycollogically speaking, this kind of boss is those with high pride or ego, which means they could easily feel embarrassed when people around her saying she is wearing the same dress as her subordinates. it's like saying her having a low taste or buying something cheap that even a very much lower rank staff is able to afford it. it's just an example, i don't mean that your rank is very much lower than her, or that your taste cannot be as high as her, or you are unable to afford to buy the same thing as her. i'm actually just commenting from her point of view as a boss. anyway, if she is not a person who cares much about outward appearance, then there should be no issue will arise between you and her. as we know, some bosses don't put much attention on their outward appearance as they are more focus on their work quality. these type of bosses are usually more down to earth and humble, when talking about outward appearance. the only issue left maybe is some rumours among the colleagues who are jealous with you, will try to say bad things about you, like you are trying to act similar like your boss, which you should just ignore them.

Hahaha.. you just love to joke that much, huh? I know who you meant because i have seen it quite often. Thanks for your support, and informative explanation. Now that i think back, i am not sure if my lady boss cares about what i wore which is similar to hers as i never knew her thoughts. But regarding your point on the matter of choosing expensive or branded things...i have heard her conversation with my other manager and colleagues before. It is regarding the health juice she is drinking, and normally we all would prefer to drink as it is very health. I cannot remember what is it. But i remember her telling my manager the price, and it was too expensive to consider. However, she did not stop my manager if she wants to buy, but rather telling her that if she wants to buy, just let my boss knows, and she will order on her behalf. However, on other matters, of course she do has her pride and ego. Maybe more likely the problem comes from the rumors among colleagues who are jealous, rather than my lady boss? Sigh.. i will try to ignore them. Thanks alot, victorywp. =)

I feel awkward seeing somebody wearing the same dress as the one I'm in when I'm going shopping or anywhere around town, and I guess it would feel weirder when that person is in my workplace, because we get to stay in the same area for a lot of hours, so the other person being my boss would probably be least I want to happen. I have not experienced this yet, thankfully, although it sounds like it should not be a big deal, I just think that it's how I would feel.

hi choybel, yes you hit the point...that is what normally i would feel. definitely an awkward feeling because bosses are the ones you least want to dress alike with. .

I have very limited number of clothes, although most of them are unique I wouldn't be surprised to see anybody owning the same.

Yes, by right it should not be surprising. But somehow sometimes it is really difficult to know what others is thinking. Some may not voice it out, but may keep it in heart. I know some people who realize that there is another person who owns a similar shirt or dress as they do, they will either put the clothing aside, or dump it away. This is really weird...Why would they care so much? Just couldn't understand it sometimes.

You've got the same taste as your boss, so what's wrong with it? Nothing! You shouldn't feel bad about it. It may feel a bit awkward but hey, you didn't plan to wear the same clothes like hers, right? Just don't mind people telling you things about it.

Hi jenny, thanks a ton for your comfort. Some may feel i am not to that standard to have the same taste like my boss though... =( But it is our freedom to buy, and i think it may not be the same brand, just the outward look is really similar. And yes, of course, i did not plan to wear the same clothes as my boss. If i did know she is going to wear that, i will choose another. Definitely not going to clash with her. Great appreciation to your encouragement, jenny! Yep, i will not mind what the others says. =)

hello friend, some people may take it light and don't care about that, but some really care ,as they don't wont their subordinates to dress like them, this a kind of superior feeling they have. yes of course ,how can we know what they are going to wear? this common sense should be there in the boss

thanks prashu, really appreciate your understanding. =) you are right, they should have this kind of common sense in them. maybe next time before i choose a dress, i should give my boss a multimedia message (MMS) showing her what dress i am wearing tomorrow. if she is wearing the same, then i should change. hahahaha.. =D

Hello joycseer Oh! I know how you feel. It's like and awkward situation, right? I remember this kind of scenario though it didn't happen to my boss but I was totally embarrassed. I went to a government agency to process some important documents. I noticed that the girl wore the same brand, same style and color of my blouse..:(. Really embarrassing and it seems like I wanna hide my face to everybody. So what I did, I just smiled at her and she smiled in return, wave her hand and said awkwardly "Hi". I don't wanna wear that clothes anymore. .

Thank you for your advice joycseer. You are right, I should keep the clothes and avoid wearing it to the same place I went or to any crowded places..:) That was a funny experience. If I'm in your place I will act the same way too. I will pretend the way you did. I'm sure that guy was totally embarrassed that time.

Hi litvillegas, thanks for your understanding. Yeap, it really does feel being in an awkward situation. Oh, you face the same problem too. Well, if the clothes looks nice, you should keep it. Maybe don't wear it at the same place you went (like the government agency). Sometimes, i saw other people dress exactly like a sales person or a waiter. There's this once, i went to a shopping mall, a business guy wore very similar to a sales person there, one of the customer mistakenly called them as sales person to help them find the size they need. This is really an embarrassment to the business guy. I pretend not to notice it in order that he do not feel embarrassed or awkward at that time.

I'd feel somewhat embarrassed if I wore the same dress as anyone let alone my boss. Ok, what you need to do is run over to the toy store right now and get yourself a Magic 8 Ball......Lol not really... As you said though its not like you can call her up every night and plan out your outfits lol. There is no way of knowing what she'll be wearing the next day. I'm sure she realizes that and while both of you might of felt a little uncomfortable one day she isn't going to hold it against you. In fact maybe now she thinks your a person with great taste lol. This may not exactly work with all outfits but I think I have an idea that might help you. If you maybe decide to wear that dress again but you're afraid this incident repeating itself why not carry a sweater or something? Granted its not going to dramatically change your entire look but at least you're not going to be exactly like you're boss.

Hi Sindelle, thank you very much for the wonderful suggestion! ;) You are smart enough to think of that. Yes, i do have a jacket on my chair all the time. I wear it when i am cold. Yes, if that happens, normally i will wear the jacket. However, when it comes to lunch time, i still need to take it off when i go out. Hahaha...i can hide for sometime, but not forever. But at least better than nothing. =)

I will feel very embarrassed if I wear the same dress as well as my boss. Because people can't help comparing to our look and then make the comments. But obviously you have the same taste as well as your boss and perhaps she shall think about this positive way?

I don't usually see my boss, but last week when I was invited to have a nice dinner with him together with some other colleagues, I found that we were wearing almost the same style shirt. I felt a little embarrassed about it. It is the first time that it so happened that we were wearing the same style, though not exactly. Take care.joycseer.

Oh i see, so you have the same experience too. Sorry to hear that. But it's okay if your boss doesn't mind, and your colleagues are fine too. =) Thank you for your kind concern, williamjisir. Have a good day!

I don't wear dresses but I had to chime in anyway. One time I wore the same outfit as a guy when I went to the movies. We just acknowledged each other and went about our night. I guess it matters to women when they wear the same thing because they want to be independent in their style even though there are only a few places to shop and only a few styles to choose from anyway.

If dressing up similarly with unknown person or friend, is not a problem at all. Unless that person minds it. However, dressing up similarly with the boss is very difficult to judge. Either some other people has "red eye" on you, or the boss is unhappy about it. Women's fashion in corporate company is more towards Office Look style. Yeah, might be true that she wants to be independent in her style.

I'm not really sure if men have the same reaction as that of women if they find themselves in a situation like this. True, it would be a little awkward, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. And I guess this applies to both gender. There might be immature colleagues of yours who would make an issue out of it, but don't let it bother you. Things like this happens. Unless we're psychics, we really don't have any way of knowing what another person would wear.

hi beamer88, thank you for your respond. yeah, maybe i should not be bothered by them and care less of what they think and talk about it. yes, you are right, they just like to make an issue so that they could gossip about...anything, any matter, they could find something to gossip, and is never ending story. just find these kind of things so petty, but they make it an issue. they should grow up...like you said, they are just being immature. hopefully they will stop this.

That won't happen to me. My superiors are required to wear formal attire, and we're not. I guess it would be awkward if this ever happened to someone, especially if the person is not close with his/her boss. LOL

hi frontvisions, since it will not happen to you, that is good for you. =) although i am not very close to my lady boss, but i do deal with her every now and then for certain important matters. hence, i feel awkward standing in front of her in similar dress. so if possible, i would prefer not to meet her...but if she calls for me, definitely there is no way to hide.

I did happened in the office with two of my girl colleagues. They did have the same kind of clothes but just in different colors and just happened that they did wear it on the same day. We dont noticed it at all since we are busy at work that time yet during lunch break someone finally noticed it and all of us laugh together.

hehehe.. this reminds me of my other colleagues too. i have 2 girl colleagues who also dress similarly often. and like you said, since we are occupied by work, we do not notice just yet. but once we do, we all have a great laughter over it. this should not be something restricted or serious.

Thanks a ton for posting this discussion. Well i can understand the situation u might have gone through when your boss wore the same dress as yours and it had got many thoughts inside your mind at that moment. U must be feeling as if the boss will get angry and will fire u from your job. I know those are quite obvious thoughts but u cannot help either. Just chill and such things happens in life. No need to get worried. What say?

yeah, that is a true point. i should not get too nervous about it. i tried to avoid my lady boss as much as possible so that she does not sees me. but i did not think that she will fire me from my job. =) it just feel so awkward having people around you thinking it is so weird to dress up so similar to own boss. as if we went out shopping together for the dress...i do not know what my colleagues are thinking, but i surely know there are dozens of questions flying through their mind. Hehe..

It might be awkward, I guess. But I can handle it well, I just hope my boss will also take nicely to it. If I did some sort of "bad reps" to that incident, I can always say that it's expensive and we have expensive tastes, lol!

hi raine, hahaha.. if your boss is so open-minded, that's good for you. if your boss accepts it, that is even better. =) well, my lady boss is a corporate woman, quite a strong kind of characteristic style of woman. i am not sure if she accepts it, so i better avoid it. but i think the trouble-makers are the staffs instead of the boss. and boss may get influenced over the staff gossiping?
