Sandy impact

All I've heard about for the last couple days is Hurricane Sandy. And we are actually feeling some impact from it despite the fact that we live well inland in Kentucky. As I speak, we are having very gusty winds in our area and the atmospheric disturbance has caused our temperature to drop over thirty degrees in the last couple of days. Less than two hours away from us in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, there is already a foot of snow on the ground as a result of this storm and they are expected to get another foot. How about you all, is your weather or your life being impacted as a result of this superstorm? If it isn't impacting you at the moment, do you think that it might in the next few days? Do you have any advice to share with those that are more directly impacted by the storm. And of course, my thoughts are with everyone that is in the Delaware, New Jersey, New York area. I hope that all of you make it through the storm safe.

I am in Ohio. It is snowing here right now, should change back to rain in the morning. We are hoping that we don't loose electric. The winds are pretty strong.

We only ended up with about 3 inches, which was gone by this afternoon. I was glad I did not have to go out.

You're right, three inches really isn't all that much at all and snow that doesn't stick around for very long is always something that is nicer than those snows that seem to stay on the ground for ever.

The winds here were really heavy last night and we've had a very cold rain going off and on all day. However, that is the most that we've experienced. I'm happy that we haven't had the snow because I'm just not ready for snow right now.

Well no, I am not personally being impacted by Hurricane Sandy thank goodness. I live in South Florida and it completely missed us, we were concerned last Friday and Saturday but we just got some rain and lots of wind. The weather is unseasonably cool right now but it is a nice change for us. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone that is affected by Hurricane Sandy. I hope that it blows through soon and doesn't cause any further damage.

Luckily we haven't had to deal with the power outages and such that they said were possible for us. But the cold and the wind has been something else. One of my friends in Delaware/New Jersey posted a picture of a boardwalk that she used to visit and it is just desimated. So sad to see really.

I'd be more than happy to go out there and visit you. In fact, if I ever do find the opportunity to head out to Arizona again, I will definitely have to let you know and we could go out for lunch or coffee or something like that.

Well, even though our impact here from the storm is passed, I will gladly hop on a plane and come out there and visit you if you would just send me the airplane ticket. I'd rather fly out of LEX as it is more convenient, but SDF would work as well.

I have watched the impact of Hurricane Sandy last night on TV. I remember the past typhoons we had here. But Sandy is way stronger. I just can't imagine seeing New York in flood. Let us pray that Sandy will stop causing destruction, the soonest.

Sandy was really quite a storm and I have to admit that though there has been a lot of damage, it isn't to the magnitude that I expected. I was thinking that it would have been comparable to the damage of Hurricane Katrina several years ago.

We are good and made it throw the night okay. We are far enough inland in Virginia that mostly we just got lots of wind and rain some things moved around and a few power outages but other then a few little things nothing major out in Northern Virginia. My little ones slept throw the whole things last night. We are still getting the last of the tropical storm.

That is great that you all didn't have to go through flooding. I know that flooding is something that can happen anywhere and something that is always a nightmare to deal with.

I'm glad to hear that your family was able to make it through the storm well. I knew that you'd moved to Virginia, but I wasn't sure what part of the state and didn't know if you were going to be largely impacted by the storm. It's great to hear that the children slept through it.

Yeah we just got a lot of rain and wind very little damage to anything around were I'm at now. Small branches had fallen and thankfully our house was okay and thankfully the river didn't over flow and our basement didn't flood.

i have a story to tell about this matter, a story of my friend. he told me that he fall asleep in his car when a police approached him to wake up and keep himself in a safety place. that time he was in airport to fetch another friend of him. his car was so wrecked but is doing well and in safe. he managed to capture a picture of him in a falling tree and in a windy weather. thanks for joining here :O)

It is good to hear that your friend was able to make it through the storm. This could have easily been a story that turned out significantly different.

i am in Canada and just above NY state and we got the remnants of sandy. once sandy hit shore, she was downgraded but still she caused a heavy amount of damage in the NYC area. however, where i live, not so much wind but we definitely got the storm surge (we live near the shore of lake Ontario). the most damage was high waters, lots of power outages in the Toronto Beaches area, lots of downed trees (the wind got up to 90 miles per hour up here). one poor women got killed in Toronto because a Staples sign fell on her! now we just have to suffer through some more rain (til Friday) and hopefully we have some sun on the weekend!

Oh, I hope that you will be able to see some sun during the weekend as well. That will be something that will help things to dry up and it will help emotionally after the storm as well.

Here in Ohio we are getting the same kind of things, temp dropped drastically, it's still windy and today is the first day it hasn't rained in a week but we are expecting more. The electric is out in a couple towns nearby as a result and even though the electric company is working on getting it restored, it might be another few days before they can get it back on.

We were lucky enough to have a few days last week where it didn't rain. However, Saturday more than made up for those nicer days for us. We were driving north to a wedding in Cincinnati and there were times during the drive where the visibility was down to nothing.

I thought we'd be immune to this as well here in Wisconsin. However they are expecting the waters of the great lakes to rise. So far the news has said areas closer to the Chicago - Indiana coast lines of Lake Michigan will be affected moreso than here. But they showed people along the southern portion Lake Shore Drive a few counties south east of here are sandbagging their homes especially along beaches. Though I'm far enough inland I don't think that'll affect us much outside of higher gas prices.

I actually haven't noticed a change in the gas prices here yet (and I certainly hope that we don't). Whereas a traditional hurricane that hits in the southern part of the country automatically means that gas prices will skyrocket (at least for a few days) this particular hurricane has not done that.

I'm quite a bit west of you in Kentucky. Predictions were running that even the Evansville, IN area would be impacted and that's pretty much my region. So far, we've just had the lower temps due to the cold front that moved through. I think we're expecting a little wind and rain as after effects of the hurricaine. I've got enough nonperishables to do me for a while should the winds create any power outages. Batteries are ok for the big lights that I keep handy. Cat food is stocked up and we have water. I, too, hope everyone is staying safe. But, according to the news reports, some people just didn't make it.

You are right that there were some people that didn't make it through the storm and I pray for them and for their families as well. Now that the majority of what we were expecting here has passed, I can tell you that we definitely had some heavy winds last night, but it could have been worse and thankfully we didn't experience any kind of power outages.

We will be feeling the impact of Sandy for the next couple of days. I don't really know what the winds brought us in the overnight hours; I guess we will see once the sun rises, and we go back over to check out our place. We didn't get the worst of the weather here. However, we definitely got a share of the storm.

Were I live, we were far from getting the worst of the storm. It is really rare for us to actually feel any of the effects from a hurricane, but I can definitely say that this has brought us some of the strangest weather that I've ever experienced in my life.

This storm has already caused much disruption in areas just outside the main storm areas, with snow, wind and lower temperatures and causing people to move temporarily. Where the storm eye has hit much more has happened, with at least 13 being killed, floods, power cuts and damage with a crane collapsing in New York.

I've heard that there has been 20 confirmed deaths and that is so very sad. I just hope that the families of these individuals are able to find some peace in the wake of these tragic losses.

It is sad that there were individuals that lost their lives in this natural disaster. However, I don't think that there will ever be a natural disaster that doesn't take at least a few lives. I also know that there was great preparation in the wake of this storm where this hasn't always been the case in the past.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes u are right, even i had posted a discussion that displayed my concern for all the those people who will come under the effect of Hurricane Sandy as its intensity has increased very much. I can understand that its effect is even being felt at your place even though it wont cause any such damage at your place. I just hope all those people out there will take proper take of themselves and be alert everytime. What say?

I'm actually glad that I've been able to hear from most of my friends that lived in the direct path of the storm through facebook. I have a lot of friends that live in that area and I was really worried about them. They've all reported that they and their families are safe so that is something for which I am thankful. However, I also feel really bad about those people that lost their lives and the families of those people.

It is really sad that there were so many people that lost their lives as a result of this store. And I do hope that those individuals that lost their lives will be able to rest in peace. However, I also consider it to be lucky that there were not more people that lost their lives during this store.

I live in west ky and we have had some winds and it has been colder here the gas prices has not been to bad I do have a brother out in New york that I am still worried about but it seems like these storms come about once a year makes you wonder what is next.

Oh, I've always been taught to never ask "what next?" because it will mean that something worse is to come. With the gas prices, I noticed that they jumped about a quarter today, which is a lot, but it still leaves the prices lower than they were a month ago, which is a good thing.

I'm definitely not ready for snow here now. Of course, I do live in an area where there is not a lot of snow in the earlier months of the winter, we are typically good for the February and March snows.
