My daughter suddenly ask a question if what was "Tokwa" in English word. After hearing it my sister suddenly answered "Tofu!" I suddenly think, I said "Is it soy bean curd???" My sister laughed, she said "ha ha I don't know, what was it really?" Then I search the answer here in mylot SE. We just found out that Tofu and Soy Bean Curd are just the same. Soy Bean Curd is the English term while Tofu is the Chinese term. So, we just laugh.lol

Yeah they are just the same. But tofu is softer than the usual "tokwa". It's the one ideal for soup I think. But I love "tokwa" more especailly when fried and dip in soy sauce with calamnsi and onion. Oh, I am craving for that now. Haha

Tokwa is one of my favorite side dish. Here in Saudi Arabia, you can't find that word in the store or super market, only tofu. So, when we are talking in the house, we use the word tokwa. Example, "I wanted tokwa as side dish today". But when we go to the supermarket, we would look for the word tofu and thus buy it. I have not seen a store or market here calling it a soy bean curd either.

Lol. Soy Bean Curd is the English term, but since the language adapted to foreign language easily, Tofu is used instead. But English Tofu refers to all variety of soy bean curd.

Yep, they're just the same. But tofu is the more common term for tokwa than soy bean curd. My husband offered that maybe its because when packing and labeling, "tofu" have fewer letters than soy bean curd, so it's somewhat cheaper to produce, lol!

well i don't think there is an english name for tokwa. tofu is soy bean curd, that much i agree. however, there are so many kinds of 'tofu' in the market. the english names for these products are all tofu. however, they are different kinds of soy bean curd. tokwa refers to a particular type of tofu that is harder in texture and salty by nature. it's usually used in braising or frying. tokwa literally translate to 'bean' 'dry', which i believe refers to the drier texture compared to tofu.

I have never heard tofu called Soy Bean Curd we have always called it Tofu and that is what its called in all of our stores. Now I know its soy bean curd but I would never call it that its Tofu. Its funny though how in different places things are called different things.

Yeah, sometimes we argue over words that have in fact the same meaning. And when we realize it, it kind of makes us feel foolish. You're right that 'tokwa' is a type of soybean curd similar to tofu but coarser and more cake-type. I think tofu is actually a Japanese word but was derived from a Chinese word doufu.
