Hello mylotters. How are you all ? I was away for quite some time, and have not been active in the mylot community. Happy to be back and participating again. I certainly shall try to stay active in the community as often as I can fom now on. In fact I was travelling in the Asia-Pacific Region, a very interesting region, very rich cultures. It always is interesting to hear the languages spoken. One time, I was so amazed to know that there are over one hundred languages spoken in Myanmar, a fairly small country, population about 60 million. That is really amazing ! Do you know of any other country where there are over one hundred different languages ? Comparing with your country, how many languages are spoken there, for example ?

Hello greenline How fascinating ! Yes Myanmar is a small country so amazing it has one hundred languages. In my country I'm not really sure about the exact figure about the language spoken but all I know we have hundred of dialects in the Philippines. I searched in the internet it says that Spanish was the official language for more than three centuries. Under the US occupation English began to be taught in schools and the use of Spanish declined gradually. And now, finally we use our own language, the Tagalog language.

I think a lot of Asian countries has a diverse populace that speaks different languages. One reason probably is the easy migration of people from other nearby countries. The Asia-Pacific region after all is somewhat an area composed of several small countries In the Philippines, studies have classified around 120-plus languages, but our official language is Filipino and English.

Well, the politically correct term to use is Filipino. Before it was Tagalog but there was some bit of disagreement with other non-Tagalog speakers. Tagalog actually is only spoken in a few regions which sort of brought howls of protests from the other regions. Says a lot about our country, doesn't it?

I knew that Myanmar had a variety of languages, but a figure of 100 seemed absurdly large. I was so sceptical that I checked online, at Wikipedia, and was amazed to discover that you are perfectly correct. I understand that many small areas will have their own language due to the country being so densely populated, but I agree with you that for such a small country it is a tremendous figure. Here in the England we have only English as a native tongue, but due to a large level of immigration there are many individual languages spoken by various ethnic groups. All countries will have started out with many languages during the period when they were small tribal pockets of people, but they usually combine over the centuries as civilisation expands.

Yes, the figure was almost unbelievable ! As I have been saying, to me language is one of the wonders of the world. It would be just beyond imagination how many languages there are around and over the world !

Hi, Good to see you back and welcome back. it is really amazing to know that so many languages are spoken at one stage. In India there are as many languages as 30+ through the country. Even in an Indian currency you will find about 16 languages including English & Hindi.

I do not know how many languages do our country the Philippines have. But to my knowledge, I think its more than 100 already. In my hometown, we have different dialects too and it is really confusing if you do not know how to understand each town's dialects. Communication crisis will exists.

More than 100 ? Oh, that is really amazing ! Yeah, there can be communication crisis, as you say. If I could speak 5 languages, that would be enough for me !
