Halloween costumes at school

I logged into Facebook a few minutes ago and I am seeing all sorts of pictures posted of kids at school in their Halloween costumes. When I was growing up we got to do the costume thing at school and when we were living in the country my son was allowed to wear a costume to school on Halloween. In the city where we live now costumes are NOT allowed at school. My daughters class is doing a pumpkin party and handing out candy, but NO costumes are allowed. Just wondering if the city I live in is strange for the whole no costumes at school thing or if it is becoming a regular thing anymore. Do your kids get to wear costumes to school?

Around here each school and district is different. My oldest did kingergarten through 3rd grade in a different district, and they didn't celebrate Halloween there at all. Then we moved out here, and the schools are split up a bit funky.. they have K-2 in one school, 3-5 in another.. then middle school and high school. Well my son came out here in 4th grade and the prinicpal of that school let the kids dress up, but they had to go with a theme.. that year it was countries. The kids had to represent a country somehow. I didn't really like that. After that year they got a new principal who did let them dress up and do parades. Now they've switched the grades and one school has K-4 while the 5th graders combined into the middle school. The K-4 school does have parades.. but the 5th graders won't.

I think I stopped around 13 or 14. I didn't got trick or treating past 12. After that I stayed home and passed out candy. I didn't have money for costumes this year. Jeremy was not too big on dressing up anyway, so I just had to worry about Lily. I bought a thing of face paint with fake blood and fake skin and the rest was stuff we already had.

I forget now when we stopped dressing up.. I think we dressed up in middle school if we wanted to, but no parade. We could dress up in high school too if we wanted to. The last time I dressed up I was like 14ish.. some friends of mine talked me into it and gave me a costume. I mostly stopped because my mother couldn't afford it and most years I had to make my own anyway.

In our town, they wear costumes in the Elementary schools. They have a parade where all the kids show off their costumes and parents can come and watch. They are not however, allowed to wear hats, masks, blood, or carry anything that resembles a weapon. For grades 6 on up, individual classrooms can have costume parties if they wish (same rules apply) otherwise, the kids don't wear costumes. I think it is fast becoming the norm to not wear costumes to school because of the safety of the children, as well as the trying to block them from scary stuff or violent images.

The school in the country did that parade thing where the kids went from classroom to classroom. We were also allowed to bring in homemade treats and now they have to be store bought.

Yup, we have to do store bought now as well. Apparently food allergies are becoming extremely common and store bought is the only way they can know all the ingredients in the treat.

We never were allowed to dress up as Halloween. Mainly because the school didn't want to have to make a do and don't list. Because inevitably someone would pick a costume that would offend. And nowadays with it being such a politically correct climate, schools would just rather not deal with it.

Well from what I understand it has something to do with calling them fall parties as some don't believe in Halloween....we wore costumes and so did my kids. But my daughter who is a teacher said in some places they aren't allowed to celebrate Halloween so they don't offend anyone.

I understand that some people don't celebrate and that might be why. I just think it is weird that they have a pumpkin party and pass out candy, cut up pumpkins and toast the seeds, and spend the whole month talking about pumpkins, but can't talk about Halloween.

Not here. No candy allowed either. Since they passed that no junk food thing, they have become very strict about all the holiday parties and anything else that pertains to food. I remember the dress-up parties at school too. They were fun for the kids.

Just another day huh? I just think it strange that they got to pass out candy and they got no homework and the reason stated by the teacher is "some may be out trick or treating", but Halloween is never mentioned.

Around here they still do. Does your son go to a private school? That would make a little more sense to me.

No, they both have always gone to public schools. We live in the city now though, so they have different rules I guess.

I'd ask the school what their reason is? Locally, the kids are allowed to bring a costume to school that they can quickly throw on for the parade and a party afterwards. I've heard that some schools don't allow it for religious reasons.

I dont have kids but i know the kids arent allowed to wear their costimes to scholl i think it might be due to other kids bullying and being mean to others so i think its good to not wear their costumes. My cousins are in dance and lastnight they had dance and wore their costumes then and got to enjoy wearing it more than once.

One of my daughters who is in 4th grade was not allowed to dress up while my daughter who is in Kindergarten was not only allowed but also participated in a parade. They don't call them Halloween parties anymore though, but rather Harvest Parties.

Well, in my country, there isn't Halloween, but another costume festival, it's sometime in February. Here, kids in kindergarten, and the first four years of elementary school can wear costumes in class, older students (like upper elementary schools and high schools) cannot, but sometimes after-school costume parties are given to them, when they can wear costumes, but it isn't compulsory.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes i am sure u must have been thrilled after watching the pics of the kids donning various Halloween costumes and they must be looking lovely as well. i find it really strange to hear that schools at your place are not allowing costumes to wear on such a day and i know many students would have been disappointed because of this. I think they should be sensible enough to allow costumes on this day at least. What say?

I think kids all like to wear costumes in a special day.

Well, here in our place some schools allowed that especially for privately owned and run school but here in public schools is only a regular no class day. Kids doesn't even bother to wear costume. though I am not saying that no costumes are allowed practically kids in the lower class thinks that it is just a waste of money...i guess...
