We are relocating from NZ to Australia at the end of the year. What do people think are the most important things to check out first?

Closest pub, best schools, shops, tennis courts, swimming pools, beaches etc. It is important to fully investigate a new area before moving into it. See if you can get in touch with a reliable "Local" and pick their brains for all the goings on in the area you are interested in.
